What Is This Thing Called Love.

Ezra Weiss - Our Path To This Moment

Weiss is representative of a postmodern generation of young composers ( Quote: Thomas Conrad - Jazz Times)
The Rob Scheps Big Band plays the music of Ezra Weiss
Hans Koert

Recently Ezra Weiss, a US piano player and, above all, a composer and arranger, released his sixth album, entitled Our Path to this Moment. To be honest - I'd never heard of him at this side of the ocean - time to get to learn more about this composer and play his latest album.

Ezra Weiss ( photo courtesy: Vanished Twins)

Ezra Weiss, who lives in Portland (Or), where he teaches at the Portland State University, worked as a band leader in clubs in New York City, Seattle and L.A.  He studied jazz composition at the Oberlin Conservatory and got a Masters in Jazz Piano at Queens College (NYC).
He became fascinated by jazz thanks to his father’s record collection, which contained music from Ray Charles, Carmen McRae up to Cannonball Adderley, but also a lot of records with music from Broadway productionsMusic that has a story in it - … and when I was a young kid I gravitated towards those the most because they had a story build in …

Special guest: trumpet player Greg Gisbert

As a bandleader he co-led the Courtney Bryan / Ezra Weiss Jazz Orchestra and  composed two musicals for children: Alice in Wonderland: a Jazz Musical and Don’t Let The Pigeon Drive the Bus  … The former was named as one of the Ten Best Cast Albums for 2009.

 (Roark Records)

His compositions are played by a lot of jazz men and ten years ago he recorded his first album The Five A.M. Strut with a group featuring Michael Mossman (trumpet), Antonio Hart (alto saxophone), Kelly Roberge ( tenor saxophone), Leon Lee Dorsey double bass and Billy Hart drums.  Ezra Weiss, who was the leader of that sextet, played the piano.
This first album of the young graduate was a surprise for the critics, who labeled it as an auspicious debut –  a knockout of a winner - as  an album that sparkles throughout. Great words for a debut album, isn't it?
Since 2002 five more albums were released.

Ezra Weiss ( photo courtesy: Vanished Twins)

A storyteller  ….. Ezra’s albums, five up to now, all contain a message – a story … about Greek mythology, or about the pursuit of happiness or about the life and music of Shirley Horn … all recorded in small groups …… His latest album was recorded by a 17-piece big band, led by Rob Scheps, who has won his spurs in the bands of Buddy Rich, Mel Lewis and Gil Evans. This album is, as it’s title tune reads, Our Path To This Moment ….. a recollection of ten years as a composer, in which Weiss own charts are performed by a real big band – A dream that comes true.

Ezra Weiss and Rob Scheps in front of the Big Band

Personally I like the Sammy Cahn-Jule Styne composition, arranged by Ezra Weiss, It’s You Or No One, originally recorded by Sarah Vaughan with Richard Maltby’s Orchestra, December 1947, but made famous by Dexter Gordon at his 1961 Blue Note album Doin’ Allright

Enjoy this tune, It’s You Or No One as played by Rob Scheps Big Band, at the Vie de Bohème in Portland, (OR) the 2nd of February, 2012 a few days before the actual recording.

The Promise is another tracks that fascinated me, with a great alto solo by David Valdez.

If you have become anxious to hear more music by this great composer and arranger, try to find yourself a copy of his music. This album, Our Path to this Moment can be ordered directly at Ezra Weiss website.

Ellington Saxophone Encounters

The American Jazz Institute presents the Mark Masters Ensemble
... featuring Gary Smulyan
Hans Koert

The Duke Ellington Band must have been one of the most productive orchestras from the 20th Century.

Duke Ellington's Orchestra (source: tikiloungetalk.com)

Its leader, Duke Ellington, was one of the most creative composers of its time, in cooperation with Billy Strayhorn,  and famous because of his arrangements concentrated on the soloists of his band ….. but also its saxophone members, like Jimmy Hamilton, Johnny Hodges, Ben Webster or Harry Carney  composed and the tunes were played by Duke's band. Duke Ellington’s music is still popular and the American Jazz Institute, directed by Mark Masters, is one of those institutes that preserves its musical heritage. Recently an all-star band recorded less known tunes, composted by members of its saxophone section and released the album Ellington Saxophone Encounters by the Mark Masters Ensemble, featuring award-winning baritone saxophonist Gary Smulyan.

Gary Smulyan ( photo courtesy: Hans Koert)

The Mark Masters Ensemble features some great names like baritone saxophone player Gary Smulyan with  Gary Foster, Pete Christlieb, Gene Cirpriano and Don Shelton on reeds; pianist Bill Cunliffe, bass player Tom Warrington and drummer Joe LaBarbera.

Gary Foster ( photo courtesy: Hans Koert)

The album contains a dozen tracks, all originally composed by members of Ellington’s band and arranged by Mark Masters.  Listen to its openings tune Esquire Swank a composition by Johnny Hodges and Duke Ellington, which was played as part of the Magazine Suite in 1945 and was recorded in Hollywood  in 1946 for Victor

The tracks on this album were all composed by members of Ellington’s saxophone section, like the L.H. Blues, also composed by Johnny Hodges; We’re in Love Again by Harry Carney; Get Ready and Ultra Blue by Jimmy Hamilton and Ben Webster’s Love’s Away.

Pete Christlieb ( photo courtesy: Hans Koert)

The members of Mark Masters Ensemble are all skilled jazz musician who have won their spurs in jazz. Gary Smulyan is known as winner of numerous Critics Polls for playing the huge baritone saxophone in bands like the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra and the David Holland Octet.

Gary Foster ( photo courtesy: Hans Koert)

Gary Foster is a Tristano influenced alto saxophone player. Pete Christlieb is a west coast tenor saxophonist, known for his work in bands like Count Basie’s, the orchestras of Quincy Jones, Benny Goodman and the ensembles of Frank Rossolino, Carl Fontana and Shelle Manne to list some great names from the west coast.

(Capri 74118-2)

It is hard to say what track fascinated me most, …………… Jeep's Blues, Get Ready or the opening tune Esquire Swank  .....  You may find out yourself.
The latest album by Mark Masters Ensemble: Ellington Saxophone Encounters is a great album.

Lollo Meier - Fleur Manouche

Nearly 60 years after the passing away of the Gypsy guitar genius, Django Reinhardt (1910-1953), his name and legacy lives on. Django's heritage to the world includes numerous recordings from the 1930s until his untimely death in May 1953, the most famous and often played are the recordings made before WW 2 featuring Django with violinist Stéphane Grappelli as soloists in the Quintet of The Hot Club of France. However, Django's work during the war-years with a new combination of the QHCF replacing Grappelli with a reed player has also gained a deservedly growing audience among record collectors and Django enthusiasts, the famous Django composition Nuages was recorded 1940 with this combination. Numerous guitarists and string swing ensembles all over the world have been inspired by Django's recordings emulating the tecnique and solos by the master, however, indeed very few have reached the level of authenticity that qualifies the original recordings. Authentic followers of Django's guitar-style are born and raised among his own people of the Manouche clan, living a life similar to Django's and carrying on his spirit in everything they do, literally they continue and extend the tradition inherited from Django. A contemporary member of the Manouche clan, who continues and honors Django's work in his own work and authentic playing, is Lollo Meier. Enjoy Lollo Meier's relaxed and masterful solo playing in the fragment below.

According to his official website, "(...) Lollo comes from an elite family of Gypsy players and is cousin to the great Fapy Lafertin and Stochelo Rosenberg. His goal: to carry on the music of Django, with a style and technique that’s traditional, melodious, lyrical, sensitive and joyful. His mellifluous compositions have a refreshing authentic Django flavour and are played with extraordinary talent, unique style and amazing suppleness that clearly reflects that he makes music he loves." Lollo Meier has his own ensemble, a quartet, and has recorded four CDs, most recently the two of them were released, PLACHTERIDA and FLEUR MANOUCHE. The PLACHTERIDA features Fapy Lafertin as second soloist, and Hans Koert has reviewed this splendid co-work between cousins in an earlier entry. - Here we'll set focus on the FLEUR MANOUCHE CD, recorded Jan.-Feb. this year.

In 2010, the Centennial of Django's birth, Lollo Meier honored the master by going on a journey with horse and carriage from the Belgian village where Django was born to his grave in Samois. Dutch filmmaker Daan Milius has made a documentary that covers Lollo's daily life with his family in a Dutch trailerpark and this journey. The FLEUR MANOUCHE CD is inspired by the experiences from the documentary according to the advance publicity.

The first track on FLEUR MANOUCHE, Thinco's Footsteps, refers to the journey with horse and carriage, a short document of the sedate gait of the horse. On the remaining 13 tracks Lollo Meier is accompanied by Boeboe Grunholz on rhythm guitar, André Donni on clarinet and saxophone and Henry Schuler on double bass, the last track, however, is extended with Bart Keltjens on drums, Coen van Dam on piano and Ivo van der Bijl on vocals. - The repertoire of the disc covers swing standards like Honeysuckle Rose, The Sheik of Araby, After You've Gone, China Boy and I Can't Give You Anything But Love, Django compositions like Vette, Belleville, Django's Tiger and Swing 48. Further, there are two compositions by Lollo himself, Lolito and London Town, and the last track of the cd has an Italian inspired tune, Tu Vuò Fà L’americano, with the extended quartet and vocals.- Lollo Meier contributes throughout with inspired and excellent solos, but the reed player André Donni is also left space for sharing great solos with Lollo, the rhythm section is solid as a rock and provides great work as well. The promo video uploaded at YouTube gives a good impression of the music and light mood of the cd, enjoy it below!

The FLEUR MANOUCHE CD as well as the mentioned PLACHTERIDA with Fapy Lafertin is available for purchase at http://gypsymusic.nl, here you also have more info on other material from Lollo Meier.

To give you an impression of Lollo Meier's quartet in live performance, I found a video recording of a TV performance recorded recently - the 22 first minutes of the video feature the quartet, enjoy it!

For more info on Lollo Meier, pay a visit to his official website.

Jo

The legacy of Django Reinhardt and the inspiration drawn from the music and playing of this Gypsy genius lives on and is taken good care of by great, authentic musicians like Lollo Meier, who continues the tradition from Django in his own work. The FLEUR MANOUCHE CD featuring Lollo Meier and his regular quartet contains music that any follower of the Django tradition would like to add to his or her collection, timeless string swing excecuted in a convincing and most enjoyable way. - The Keep(it)swinging blog loves to inform you about these kind of important recordings and generally covers jazz and related music recorded 1912 - 2012.

Houston Person - Rein De Graaff Trio: Rein's Birthday party

Rein de Graaff celebrates 70th birthday with a series of concerts featuring the legendary tenorist  Houston Person:  As full-bodied and comforting as home baked pie ( Quote: Richard Cook’s Jazz Encyclopedia)
Hans Koert

Rein De Graaff,  Dutch piano player and leader of his Rein De Graaff Trio, with guest player Houston Person on tenor saxophone, gave a concert at the Jazzpodium DJC, aka the Dordtse Jazz Societeit, located in Dordrecht, an attractive Dutch city near Rotterdam. Rein De Graaff, who celebrated last week his 70th birthday, scheduled a series of concerts  as a birthday present to his audience.

Houston Person-Rein de Graaff Trio: Jazzfeestje in DJS (Nederlands) - Houston Person- Rein De Graaff Trio: Rein's birthday party (English)

In Dordrecht, the small, but cozy jazz club, was full packed to hear the groovy sound of the legendary tenor boss Houston Person.

Houston Person ( photo courtesy: Hans Koert)

Houston Person was born in Florence (SC) and hopes to celebrate his 78th birthday next weekend. He learned to play the piano as a kid from his mother, but became fascinated by jazz when he started to collect jazz records and learned to play the tenor saxophone.  He moved to Europe as part of his military service and played with musicians like Eddie Harris, Lanny Morgan, Lex Humphries, Leo Wright and Cedar Walton; with the latter he recently made a record, entitled Naturally. Back home he graduated as a jazz musicians at the conservatory and became a tenor player in one of those extreme popular Hammond organ trios.  One of his first recordings, early 1960s was with John Hammond Smith, better known as John Hammond.  His first own album, Underground Soul, featured Hammond organ player Charles Boston.
He also recorded with Don Patterson, Billy Gardner, Ernie Hayes, Sonny Phillips and Charles Earland, who all wanted their piece of the pie. Houston Person can be heard with piano player Cedar Walton, Paul Chambers, Pepper Adams and Curtis Fuller, to list some.

Between 1968 and 1973 he recorded several albums with vocalist Etta Jones; they often played together until Etta passed away October 2001.
Eric Ineke (photo courtesy: Hans Koert)

It is not the first time, Houston Person joins Rein De Graaff in a series of concerts. Rein De Graaff is known for his short concert tours with (almost) forgotten US jazz musicians, entitled Stoomcursus Bebop ( Bebop Crash Course), he organizes since the late 1980s. I told you about that in a previous blog. Early 1990s Rein invited Etta Jones and Houston Person in a series of concerts, labeled as A Song For A Lady. In the winter of 1998 Houston Person was asked again for a series of concerts with David ”Fathead” Newman accompanied by the Rein De Graaff  Trio ( with Koos Serierse at the double bass and Eric Ineke, time keeper in Rein’s Trio for over 40 years, on drums.) I remember a great concert in the Porgy en Bess Jazz Club (Terneuzen)(The Netherlands), where both tenor players and the trio impressed.

Houston Person ( photo courtesy: Hans Koert)

In Dordrecht, Saturday night 3rd of November, 2012, Rein and his men played two sets with a lot of bebop standards. It was fascinating to listen to Houston Person’s full massive sound, which could easily fill the club ….. As an accomplished leader, dressed in his camel-coloured suit, he seemed to organize the set list and tapped the baton without intermissions between the tunes …… In two sets the band selected several standards like The Sunny Side of the Street and The Nearness Of You, a tune, Houston Person recorded for Muse with his octet in 1977 at Rudy Van Gelder’s recording studio in Englewood Cliff.

Rein De Graaff (photo courtesy: Hans Koert)

Houston Person is still going strong …… Recently two new albums were released by HighNote, entitled Naturally and So Nice, two great cd’s featuring artists like his old friend Cedar Walton, Warren Vaché and a dreamed rhythm section: Ray Drummond and Lewis Nash. But, although Houston Person is a sought after icon on the tenor saxophone, he loves to be part of debut albums by young promising musicians. This year he was asked to play as a guest at the debut album Home by US vocalist Shirley Crabbe and a few months ago I was impressed by the album Give Me The Simple Life played by a young starting jazz pianist Joe Alterman, who asked Houston Person and the Ahmad Jamal rhythm section for his debut album. A great album by a promising young jazz musician – for me, and you can put that in your pipe, Joe and smoke it, this album is one of the surprises for 2012.

The Rein De Graaff Trio featuring Houston Person ( photo courtesy: Hans Koert)

The well known tune Moanin’,  that groovy archetypal hard bop theme, made a hit by Art Blakey and his Jazz Messengers late 1960s,  was selected by Houston Person and became one of the highlights of the evening – the audience, normally rather noisy, liked it very much and went crazy. The final song was a blues, one of Person's specialities. He likes bluesy settings on a low simmer …… Richard Cook said in his  Jazz Encyclopedia: Houston Person: As full-bodied and comforting as home baked pie.  I wondered during the concert, why the tenor players from this generation need a microphone to amplify their sound? Their massive solid sounds fills the whole room, even without an amplifier.

Houston Person ( photo courtesy: Hans Koert)

Houston Person is remembered in Rein’s biography Belevenissen in Bebop by his love for Dutch stroopwafels, treacle waffles;  We konden geen tankstation voorbij rijden of er moest gestopt worden om stroopwafels te kopen (= We couldn’t pass a filling station, without a stop at its shop to buy some package of stroopwafels), Rein wrote. Houston, who hopes to celebrate his 78th birthday next weekend, was surprised with the little something I handed him as a birthday present ....

Rein De graaff (photo courtesy: Hans Koert)

Rein De Graaff, active for over 50 years in jazz, learned that he is still a great improviser, even without his reading glasses, which broke during the concert, has no plans to stop. Seventy years old and still going strong. Mind, Rein, that a jazz musician is like a good bottle of good winethe older the better! Serve Houston as an example.  Keep (it) Swinging Rein!

Houston Person ( foto: Hans Koert)

Eric Ineke (foto: Hans Koert)

Houston Person ( foto: Hans Koert)

Houston Person ( foto: Hans Koert)

Keep (it) Swinging, Rein!
