Nat was the younger brother of Julian Cannonball Adderley  ……. A position which had its pros and cons. After the decease of Charlie Parker, Julian Cannonball Adderley was labeled as his successor, and Nat was not able to hold a candle in him; he was overshadowed by his brother … in both senses of the words.

As a young adult he joined the band of his brother's, but actually he started his professional career in the Lionel Hampton band, which took him to the other side of the ocean, sailing at the Nieuw Amsterdam ………… Nat’s first recorded concert was at the Amsterdam Apollohall ( October 28th, 1954), where he was part of the Lionel Hampton trumpet section with musicians like Wallace Davenport, Billy Brooks and Eddie Mullin. In an interview with Dutch Jazz journalist Eddy Determeyer (Jazz Nu maart 1995) Nat explains how popular Lionel Hampton’s band was in Europe. In 1956 Lionel Hampton would join one of the most talked-about concerts of The Netherlands of the 1950s, which even postponed the night concerts at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw for a few months …… Nat had left the band at that time …. In May 1955 his son Nat (Nat Adderley jr. is nowadays a sought-after arranger and piano player) was born and Nat (sr) couldn’t return in time for a series of concerts at the New York Apollo Theater. Lionel Hampton was unrelentingly and fired him.

After he joined commercial R & B bandsf or some times, he definitely joined his brother's bands, in which he would participate, with a break in the early 1960s, until his brothers death in 1975.

One of the albums from this period I love very much is Kenny Clarke’s Savoy record Bohemia After Dark ( June 1955). Due to problems with the US Internal Revenue Service’s their ways part for a few years ….. Cannonball joined  Miles Davis ( remember Cannonball’s great Blue Note album, Something Else) and Nat became a member of the J. J. Johnson and Woody Herman bands.

Since the 1960s the two brothers worked together again up to the death of  Julian Cannonball Adderley in 1975. When Cannonball had passed away, Nat continued the quintet as before, and tried to find alto saxophone players that could play in the style of his deceased brother … like Sonny Fortune, Vincent Herring and Antonio Hart.

In Workin’, recorded by the German radio station ( WDR),  in Cologne (Germany), March 26th, 1992, Nat can be heard with his quintet in half a dozen tracks, most own compositions, Plum Street, the Big J, The Scene ( Recorded for the very first time by the Cannonball Adderley Quintet in 1967) and of course his  1960 “hit” Work Song! … The profit is high enough for a living, he told Eddy in 1995:  Dat is een heel aardig inkomen …. Eerlijk gezegd zou ik ervan kunnen leven …….

 The album Workin’  with the Nat Adderley Quintet, features Nat on cornet, Vincent Herring at the alto saxophone, Rob Bargad piano, Walter Booker on bass and Jimmy Cobb  drums.  It was recently remasters by Peter Brussee and re-released by Timeless in its great Timeless Jazz Legacy series.  A jazz trumpet player with a great reputation, although in the latter days of his career, but accompanied with some famed musicians like a young Vincent Herring, who, like Nat, started his career in Hampton’s band and  in the rhythm section the legendary percussionist Jimmy Cobb. Nat suffered from diabetes, and he couldn’t perform anymore half way the 1990s. He passed away in 2000.

In its series Timeless Jazz Legacy  a dozen historical recordings were remastered and re-released.

Timeless Jazz Legacy series brengt vergeten opnamen opnieuw uit.

Hij was de broer van ……. en dat bracht hem voor- en nadelen. Nat Adderley, broer van altsaxofonist Julian Cannonball Adderley, die na het overlijden van Charlie Parker gedoodverfd werd als zijn opvolger, stond zijn leven lang in de schaduw van zijn grotere broer …..  zowel letterlijk als figuurlijk, want qua postuur en spel toornde Cannonball boven de veel kleinere Nat uit .....

Hij speelde als tiener mee in het jeugdorkest van zijn broer, maar begon zijn carriere bij Lionel Hampton, waarmee hij met de Nieuw Amsterdam de oversteek naar Europa maakte en aan deze zijde met Hampton's band rondtrok. … Nat’s eerste vastgelegde cornetklanken dateren van het Amsterdamse Apollohal-concert van 28 oktober 1954, waar hij, met Wallace Davenport, Billy Brooks en Eddie Mullins in de trompetsectie zat van het Lionel Hampton orkest.  In een interview met Eddy Determeyer (Jazz Nu maart 1995) vertelt Nat dat Lionel Hampton, die tijdens zijn optredens vooral als entertainer het publiek bespeelde en een grandioze show neerzette, mateloos populair was in Europa.  In 1956 zou hij de Nederlandse jazzscene danig opschudden door een spraakmakend optredend in het Concertgebouw, waardoor de nachtconcerten door de burgemeester van Amsterdam tijdelijk verboden werden ...... maar toen was Nat er al niet meer bij.  Hij verliet na een aantal maanden de band, omdat hij in mei 1955 niet op tijd terug was voor een optreden in het Apollo Theater in New York  vanwege de geboorte van zijn zoon Nat, die momenteel als Nat Adderley jr. naam makt als arrangeur en pianist in Rhythm and Bluesbands.

Hij ging na Lionel Hampton en een kort avontuur in commerciële rhythm and bluesbands, met zijn broer Julian spelen - een verbintenis, die, op een korte onderbreking na, zou duren tot aan Cannonball's dood in 1975.

Eén van de opnamen in mijn verzameling die ik koester,  uit die begintijd, is de Savoy-uitgave Bohemia After Dark met het ensemble van Kenny Clarke ( juni 1955). Door problemen met de belastingdienst scheidden eind jaren vijftig de wegen van de twee broers zich tijdelijk – Cannonball ging spelen bij Miles Davis ( en nam met hem  o.a. het Blue Note topalbum, Something Else op) en Nat kwam o.a. bij J. J. Johnson en Woody Herman terecht.

Vanaf de jaren zestig speelden de twee broertjes weer samen tot de dood van Julian Cannonball Adderley in 1975, daar een eind aan maakte. Nat ging alleen verder met kleine groepen, waarbij hij probeerde om muzikanten op altsax te vinden, die ongeveer klonken als zijn broer …..  zoals Sonny Fortune, Vincent Herring en Antonio Hart.

In Workin’, dat door de WDR in Keulen werd opgenomen, werd Nat Adderley met zijn quintet vastgelegd in een zestal nummers, meest eigen composities als Plum Street, the Big J, The Scene ( voor het eerst opgenomen door het Canonball Adderley Quintet in 1967) en uiteraard  zijn “hit” Work Song, waarmee hij in 1960 een hit zou hebben … Dat is een heel aardig inkomen, vertrouwde hij Eddy in 1995 toe …. Eerlijk gezegd zou ik ervan kunnen leven …….

Het album Workin’  met het concert van het Nat Adderley Quintet, met Nat op kornet, Vincent Herring op altsax, Rob Bargad piano, Walter Booker op bas en Jimmy Cobb op slagwerk, is eerder uitgebracht door Timeless en onlangs opnieuw remasterd door Peter Brussee voor de verrassende serie Timeless Jazz Legacy.  Een trompettist van naam, weliswaar in zijn nadagen (Hij moest halverwege de jaren negentig het actief musiceren stoppen vanwege gezondheidsklachten en overleed uiteindelijk in 2000 aan de gevolgen van diabetes), maar met een solide ritmesectie ( Jimmy Cobb) en een nog jonge Vincent Herring, die, net als Nat, zijn carrière begon in het orkest van Lionel Hampton.

In de serie Timeless Jazz Legacy werden tot nu toe een twaalftal historische opnamen remastered en heruitgebracht.

Nat Adderley  ....... de broer van ...... Gedoemd om zijn leven lang letterlijk en figurlijk in de schaduw te staan van zijn grotere broer Julian "Cannonball" Adderley. Jarenlang speelden ze samen tot het overlijden van Cannonball in 1975, waarna hij alleen verder moest ......  er voor zorgend dat zijn altsaxofonist net zo kon spelen als zijn grote broer ........ Timeless bracht het Nat Adderley Quintet met Vincent Herring op altsax uit 1992 opnieuw uit in haar serie Timeless Jazz Legacy.
