Newport '58: De kopersectie van de Toren van Babelband

Terwijl Marshall Brown en George Wein in Europa de leden voor hun International Youth Band, hier ook wel de Toren van Babel Band genoemd, selecteerden, waren in de VS arrangeurs en componisten bezig met the band’s book. Vandaag beperk ik me tot een introductie van de blazers, die Marshall Brown tijdens de audities selecteerde voor zijn gedroomde Newportband. In een volgende blog komen de andere spelers aan bod.

Leider, inspirator en geestelijk vader van de band, Marshall Brown, was eigenlijk ventieltrombonist, maar maakte naam als componist, arrangeur en leraar. Hij had in 1958 zijn sporen al verdiend als leider van verschillende high schoolbands.

Geboren in Framingham (Mass) december 1920, begon hij als negenjarig op de gitaar en pakte naar de ventieltrombone toen hij zestien was. Zijn ouders waren revue-artiesten; vader was goochelaar en zijn moeder speelde piano in bioscopen bij stomme films. Al op de middelbare school (1937) leidde hij het schoolorkest. In dienst speelde en arrangeerde hij met pianist Bernie Leighton.  Na de oorlog werd hij staff arranger bij allerlei orkesten als die van de East Rockaway High School en de Farmingdale High School; met laatstgenoemd orkest zou hij in 1957 spelen op het Newportfestival en dit optreden zou de directe aanleiding worden voor het formeren van een International Youth band. Hij werd een gerespecteerd muziekleraar en in 1957 geëerd als the Outstanding Educator of the Year door het Westlake College of Music.

 Terug in de VS, maart 1958, begon Marshall Brown aan de hand van zijn aantekeningen de band vorm te geven en kregen zeventien Europese muzikanten een brief, dat ze een plaats gekregen hadden in het orkest. De trompetsectie omvatte: Palle Bolvig uit Denemarken, Roger Guerin uit Frankrijk, Dusko Gojkovic uit voormalig Joegoslavië en José Manuel Magelhaes uit Portugal. De trombonesectie bestond uit: Christian Kellens (België), Kurt Jarnberg (Zweden), Erich Kleinschuster (Oostenrijk) en Albert Mangelsdorff (Duitsland).  De rietsectie werd gevormd door: Bernt Aake Rosengren (Zweden), Ptaszyn (Jan) Wroblewski (Polen), Hans Salomon (Oostenrijk), Wladimiro Bas Zabache (Spanje) en Ronald (Ronnie) Ross (Engeland). De ritmesectie: George Gruntz (Zwitserland), Rudolph (= Ruud) Jacobs (Nederland) en Gilberto (Gil) Cuppini (Italië.). De gitarist, Gabor Szabo, die oorspronkelijk uit Hongarije kwam, werd pas later geselecteerd. Als vluchteling woonde en studeerde hij sinds het midden van de jaren vijftig in de VS.

Vandaag wil ik kort de leden van de kopersectie, de blazers, introduceren in het licht van datgene dat ze tot aan hun selectie (april 1958) hadden gedaan op het gebied van de jazzmuziek. In een volgende blog komt de rest van het orkest ter sprake.

• Palle Bolvig ( Kopenhagen - Denemarken - november 1932). Trompettist en componist. Hij was in die tijd  lead-trompettist in het orkest van Ib Glindemann. In 1985 maakte hij deel uit van de groep rond Miles Davis die het Auraproject op plaat vastlegde. Hij speelde verder bij de Deense Radio Big Band en de Ernie Wilkins Almost Big Band.  De foto laat hem zien samen met de bekende Deense bassist Niels-Henning Ørsted Pederson.

Roger Guerin ( bron: 100 years of jazz)

• Roger Guerin (Saarbrücken (toen Frans-, nu Duits gebied – januari 1926)) Toen Roger Guerin geselecteeerd werd voor de International Youth Band, was hij al heel wat jaren druk in de muziek. Hij begon in 1947 als professioneel trompettist bij de Aime Barelli Band, gevolgd door bands waarin grote namen als Claude Bolling, Maurice Moufflard, André Hodeir, Django Reinhardt, Claude Luther, Gerard Pochonet, Jacques Dieval, Christian Chevalier en Bobby Jaspar speelden.  Hij nam deel aan concerten met Amerikaanse jazzmusici als Dizzy Gillespie, James Moody, Buck Clayton, Jimmy Raney, Don Byas en de in Frankrijk neergestreken New Orleans klarinettist Sidney Bechet. Roger overleed bijna drie jaar geleden in Nymes (februari 2010).
• Dusko Gojkovic (Jajce (toen Joegoslavië, nu Bosnië - Herzegovina) oktober 1931). Toen Dusko geselecteerd werd, woonde en werkte hij in Duitsland bij het orkest van Kurt Edelhagen en Catherina Valente  en met Chet Baker in de  Storyville club in Frankfurt.  De afbeelding laat Dusko zien met Birks ( = Dizzy Gillespie).
• De vierde trompettist, die een bericht kreeg was de Portugees  José Manuel Magelhaes ( Lissabon (Portugal) januari 1929). In de zomer van 1958 speelde hij in de trompetsectie van het radio-orkest van de Portugese omroep en had hij een eigen dansband, waar ook zijn drie broers in speelden.   

• Christian Kellens (Andenne (België) januari 1925). Professioneel trombonist sinds het eind van de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Je vindt hem terug in heel wat Belgische orkesten, zoals de bands van Jack Sels en Bobby Jaspar, maar speelde ook bij Kurt Edelhagen, Jack Dieval en Martial Solal om er een paar te noemen. Toen hij geselecteerd was speelde hij samen met Dusko Gojkovic in de Kurt Edelhagen Big Band.  Halverwege de jaren zestig emigreerde hij naar Argentinië waar hij o.a. bij het orkest van Jorge Anders aanschoof tijdens opnamen met Oscar Aleman (1973). Hij schijnt nu weer in België te wonen.
• Kurt Jarnberg, Zweeds trombonist speelde in de Zweeds-Deense jazzscene bij de bands van Lars Gullin en Ib Glindemann.  Een paar weken voordat Kurt naar Newport vertrok speelde hij in een orkest dat de Zweedse zangeres Monica Zetterlund begeleidde.  In dit okest was hij in het goede gezelschap van Benny Bailey, Ake Persson en Arne Domnerus. 

Erich Kleinschuster ( bron Salzi.at)

• Erich Kleinschuster  ( Graz (Oostenrijk) januari 1930) speelde als trombonist in het Kleiner Tanzorchester von Radio Graz en werd beroepsmusicus na zijn Amerikaanse avontuur.

•  Albert Mangelsdorff (Frankfurt am Main (Duitsland) september 1928).  Begin jaren vijftig begon hij als trombonist bij het orkest van Joe Klimm en Hans Koller’s New Jazz Stars. Hij maakte al opnamen onder eigen naam in 1954. In maart 1957 begeleidde hij met zijn Jazz Sextet de Amerikanen Bud Shank en Bob Cooper, die, niet toevallig, ook in ons land optraden tijdens een vijftal concerten in Den Haag ( Gebouw voor K & W), Koog aan de Zaan ( De Waakzaamheid), Amsterdam (Concertgebouw), Rotterdam (Rivierahal) en Busssum (Concordia), begeleid door het Trio van Pim Jacobs ( met Ruud op bas en Wessel Ilcken op slagwerk). Albert was in de periode voor Newport al een veel gevraagd musicus …… Hij zou zich ontwikkelen tot één van de belangrijkste Europese trombonisten, die zijn sporen in de (free) jazz ruimschoots verdiende. Hij overleed in juli 2005 in Frankfurt am Main. ( wordt vervolgd)

George Wein en Marshall Brown hopscotched in het voorjaar van 1958 Europe conducting auditions on a back-breaking schedule ..... Ze beoordeelden honderden jazzmuzikanten van professionals tot amateurs en alles wat daar tussen zat ...  Uiteindelijk werden zeventien jonge veelbelovende Europese jazzspelers geselecteerd voor wat de Toren van Babelband zou gaan heten, die in 1958 op het Newportfestival mocht optreden. Voor Nederland werd Ruud Jacobs uitgekozen. In Newport '58: De kopersectie van de Toren van Babelband deze keer de blazers die op de zeef voor deze International Youth Band waren blijven liggen.

Newport '58: Babel's Band brass section

In spring 1958 George Wein and Marshall Brown hopscotched Europe conducting auditions on a back-breaking schedule .....  They heard hundreds upon hundreds of musicians, amateur, professional, and every stop in between.(Source: Liner notes Columbia CS 8073). In a series of blogs Ruud Jacobs, Dutch bass player, remembers his debut at Newport. Today Ruud won't speak, but you can learn more about the brass section, Brown selected for his International Youth Band, aka the Babel's Band.

Leader, aspirator and spiritual father of the band, Marshall Brown, was a valve trombonist, composer, arranger and educator.

He had won its spurs as a conductor of high school bands. Born in Framingham Mass, December 1920 he started to play the guitar at nine and switched to the valve trombone at 16. His parents were vaudeville artists: his father was a magician and his mother played the piano in silent movies. While in high school, 1937, he led his first band and during his military services he played and arranged with piano player Bernie Leighton.  After the war he became the staff arranger at Adirondacks Summer Hotel and orchestras of East Rockaway High School and Farmingdale High School; with the latter he played in Newport 1957 which was the direct opportunity for the Babel Band’s birth …….  He was, in his days, a respected educator ……  labeled in 1957 as the Outstanding educator of the year by Westlake College of Music.

 Back in the States, March 1958, Marshall Brown started to build his band and informed the musicians who were selected.  Seventeen musicians were notified by cable .....: The trumpet section featured: Palle Bolvig from Denmark, Roger Guerin from France, Dusko Gojkovic from Yugoslavia and José Manuel Magelhaes from Portugal. The trombone section featured: Christian Kellens (Belgium), Kurt Jarnberg (Sweden), Erich Kleinschuster (Austria) and Albert Mangelsdorff (Germany).  The reed section featured: Bernt Aake Rosengren (Sweden), Ptaszyn (Jan) Wroblewski (Poland), Hans Salomon (Austria), Wladimiro Bas Zabache (Spain) and Ronald (Ronnie) Ross (England). The rhythm section featured George Gruntz (Switzerland), Rudolph (= Ruud) Jacobs (The Netherlands) and Gilberto (Gil) Cuppini (Italy.). Gabor Szabo ( Hungary), who lived as a refugee in The States was invited later to join the band.

Today I love to introduce you to the member of the brass section of the band and love to describe their experiences in jazz when they were invited in April 1958 for the Newport band:

• Palle Bolvig (born Copenhagen - Denmark - November 1932) Trumpet player and composer. He was, in those days,  the lead trumpet player in the Ib Glindemann Orchestra. In 1985 he was part of the Miles Davis band that recorded the Aura project. He was part of the Danish Radio Big Band and the Ernie Wilkins Almost Big Band.  The picture shows him with the well known Danish bass player Niels-Henning Ørsted Pederson.

• Roger Guerin (born in Sarrebruck (France) (= now Saarbrücken (Germany) – January 1926)) When Roger Guerin was selected for the 1958 International Youth Band he was already active in music for ten years. He started professionally as a trumpet player in 1947 in the Aime Barelli Band followed by engagements with Claude Bolling, Maurice Moufflard, André Hodeir, Django Reinhardt, Claude Luther, Gerard Pochonet, Jacques Dieval, Christian Chevalier and Bobby Jaspar.  He joined concerts with US jazz musicians like Dizzy Gillespie, James Moody, Buck Clayton, Jimmy Raney, Don Byas and the France-based clarinet player Sidney Bechet …..  A very active musician …  He passed away in Nymes February 2010.

• Dusko Gojkovic (born in Jajce (Yugoslavia) ( = now Bosnia and Herzegovina) October 1931). When Dusko was selected to play trumpet in the International Youth Band he was living in Germany, where he performed in the band of Kurt Edelhagen with vocalists like Catherina Valente  and with Chet Baker at the Storyville club in Frankfurt.  The picture shows Dusko with Birks ( = Dizzy Gillespie)

The fourth trumpet player selected was the Portuguese José Manuel Magelhaes (born in Lisbon (Portugal) January 1929).  When he was selected he played in the trumpet section of the band of the National Radio Station of Portugal and had his own dance band, in which three of his brothers participated.

• Christian Kellens (born in Andenne (Belgium) January 1925). He was a trombone player and a  professional jazz musician since the end of World War II. He was active in several Belgium orchestras. Like the bands of Jack Sels and Bobby Jaspar, but also played in the band of Kurt Edelhagen, Jack Dieval and Martial Solal to list some. When he was selected, he played again in Kurt Edelhagen’s Big Band, as a colleague of Dusko Gojkovic.  Mid 1960 he moved to Argentina and played in Jorge Anders Orchestra, which recorded a great LP-album with Oscar Aleman (1973). Later he returned to Belgium.
• Kurt Jarnberg, a Swedish trombone player had been active in the Swedish – Danish jazz scene in bands like Lars Gullin’s and Ib Glindemann’s  and a few days before he left for Newport he accompanied, as part of an orchestra, the Swedish vocalist Monica Zetterlund; a band which included great names like Benny Bailey, Ake Persson and Arne Domnerus.

• Erich Kleinschuster ( born in Graz (Austria) January 1930) played as a trombonist in the Kleiner Tanzorchester von Radio Graz and became a full professional after his trip to Newport.

•  Albert Mangelsdorff (born in Frankfurt am Main (Germany) September 1928 – passed away Frankfurt am Main (Germany) July 2005)  He started early 1950s as a trombonist in the band of Joe Klimm and Hans Koller’s New Jazz Stars  and in 1954 he even made his first records under his own name.  In March 1957 he toured with his Jazz Sextet, which featured US west coast musicians like Bud Shank and Bob Cooper. He was a very active trombone player when he left for Newport …… He would develop as one of the most important European trombonists in the free style jazz. He passed away in Frankfurt, July 2005.
