Onlangs verschenen twee dubbel cd’s met concerten van pianist Bill Evans: Live at Art D’ Lugoff’s Top of the Gate (New York City) (23 oktober 1968) en Momentum ( Stadsschouwburg - Groningen (4 februari 1972).

Bill Evans, geboren in Plainfield (NJ) augustus 1929, overleed bijna 32 jaar geleden ( september 1980). An enormously influential figure …… omschrijft Brian Priestley hem in the Rough Guide to Jazz - his music was always extreme creative, floating without the limitations of the 4/4 meter .. freed from the lockstep 4/4 that had come to exercise in tyranny over jazz …. . Bill Evans, schrijft Nat Hentoff, would sometimes get so involved in the piano that he would lean over and lean over and you’d think he was about to be swallowed by the piano. Bill Evans opnamen zijn nog steeds extreem populair – zelfs 32 jaar na zijn dood weet hij duizenden fans aan zijn muziek te binden. Ontelbare live-opnamen van optredens zijn op plaat verschenen, vaak opgenomen achter in de zaal met een eenvoudig bandrecordertje … bootlegs, die alle een inferieure geluidskwaliteit gemeen hebben – maar de twee onlangs uitgebrachte concerten horen daar niet bij – zij zijn professioneel opgenomen en hoe …..

Het concert in de Top of the Gate, de bovenzaal van de Village Gate werd, met toestemming van Bill Evans persoonlijke manager Helen Keane, opgenomen door George Klabin, een 22 jaar oude student aan de Columbia Universiteit en slechts één keer uitgezonden door de Columbia University WKCR-FM radio show.
De Top of the Gate was onderdeel van de Village Gate in New York City. Het bestond uit een lange zaal waar het publiek kon eten en drinken, herinnert bassist Eddie Gomez zich: It attracted a much different sort of listeners (dan de Village Gate). You could find musicians stopping by, film- and TV celebrities and also tourists, who wanted to sample the Greenwich Village scene. Toen Bill in de Top of the Gate optrad, speelden op de begane grond, in de Village Gate dus zowel Thelonious Monk als het Charles Lloyd Quartet tijdens een zgn. double-bill concert. Is dat niet geweldig als je je bedenkt dat er zoveel talent samengebald is in één gebouw? De hoogtijdagen van de jazz! Maar het is zoals slagwerker Marty Morell verzucht: ….Sadly, those days will never be back …
Bill Evans - Momentum ( Limetree MCD 043)
Het concert in de Stadsschouwburg van Groningen kwam tot stand door de Nederlandse pianist Jan Warntjens, een Evans aficionado en Rob Rijneke schrijft in het bijbehorende boekje, dat ook Jan toestemming had om opnamen te maken.
Hij digitaliseerde de opnamen professioneel en daardoor bleven de banden prima bewaard ….. Nu, na veertig jaar worden ze voor het eerst uitgebracht op een dubbel cd, die de titel Momentum kreeg; een suggestie van Bill’s weduwe Nenette Evans: At the time of this recording in 1972, Bill was experiencing a momentous upswing in his personal life, his health, and his career, herinnert ze zich …. so I would like to give the album the appropriate title of Momentum. Bill heeft zo’n eenentwintig keer opgetreden in ons land, leert het bijbehoren informatieve boekje … de eerste keer was in februari 1965, waarbij Bill Evans met zijn trio optrad tijdens een dubbelconcert in het Concertgebouw samen met het Piet Noordijk-Misha Mengelberg Quartet en het laatste vond plaats in 1979, een jaar voordat hij overleed. Heel wat Nederlanders zullen zijn optredens tijdens het populaire radioprogramma Tros Sesjun herinneren, waarvan onlangs delen werden heruitgebracht – optredens in 1973 en 1975 in de Boerenhofstede in Laren en de Meerkoet in Lelystad ( Bill Evans The Sesjun Radio Shows.)
De Stadsschouwburg van Groningen
Twee concerten – elk van twee sets – met dezelfde bezetting maar toch slechts met een paar dezelfde nummers: Bill Evans natuurlijk op piano; Eddie Gomez, op bas - al sinds 1966 deel uitmakend van het trio en Marty Morell, de up-and-coming slagwerker, die net begonnen was bij Bill toen de opnamen in de Top of the Gate plaatsvonden – Beide albums bevatten zo’n 30 nummers – waarvan slechts twee overlappen: Bill's compositie Turn Out The Stars en de standard Emily. Deze twee sets zijn waardevolle documenten voor iedereen die de concerten heeft gemist of ze nog een keer opnieuw wil beleven ………

Het Nederlands Jazz Archief maakt zware tijden door. De bezuinigingen door de regering leiden er toe dat het Nederlands Jazzarchief gesloten zal gaan worden en dat mag natuurlijk niet gebeuren. De Keep (it) Swinging blog is van mening dat het archief ( en het informatieve kwartaalblad het Jazz Bulletin) bewaard en toegankelijk moet blijven om het verhaal van de Nederlandse jazz te kunnen blijven vertellen aan de generaties na ons. Keep (it) Swinging heeft zich aangemeld als Vriend van het Nederlands Jazz Archief. Het zou mooi zijn als u het voorbeeld volgde en ook het Nederlands Jazzarchief steunde. .........
De oude meesters van de jazz liggen in de graaibakken - de muziek van Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Chet Baker en Bill Evans van voor 1962 wordt zonder gêne gejat en voor een appel en een ei verkwanseld - de serieuze platenmaatschappijen delven het onderspit ... Toch gebeuren er nog wondertjes en wordt oud materiaal opnieuw uitgebracht .... - Limetree and Resonance brachten onlangs twee schitterend liveopnamen uit, twee dubbelcd's, van het Bill Evans Trio, op genomen in de Top of the Gate in New York City (1968) en in ons eigen land, de Stadsschouwburg in Groningen - beide in een uitstekende geluidskwaliteit ..... Twee concerten die je niet mag missen!

Bill Evans recordings are still extreme popular – even 32 years after he passed away, a lot of jazz fans listen to his music. Numerous live recordings have been released since he passed away – most boot legs, often taped on a home recorder from the back of a club, recorded in an inferior quality …….. , but these two concerts were both taped professional ………….. in an excellent sound quality.

The concert at the Top of the Gate was recorded by George Klabin, then a 22 year old student at Columbia University, with the permission of Bill’s manager Helen Keane. The taped concert was broadcasted just once for a Columbia University WKCR-FM radio show.
The Top of the Gate was part of the Village Gate club in New York City. It was a large room where audiences dined and drank, Eddie Gomez, the bass player in the trio remembers: It attracted a much different sort of listeners (then the Village Gate). You could find musicians stopping by, film- and TV celebrities and also tourists, who wanted to sample the Greenwich Village scene. When Bill played at the Top of the Gate, in the Village Gate both Thelonious Monk and the Charles Lloyd Quartet were performing on a double-bill. Isn’t it great to realize all those icons play under the same roof? But it is like Marty Morell, the drummer, recalls …. Sadly, those days will never be back …
Bill Evans - Momentum ( Limetree MCD 043)
The Groningen concert was taped by Jan Warntjens, a Dutch pianist and Evans aficionado, Rob Rijneke says in the liner notes, and also Jan was allowed to tape the concert professionally.
It was transferred from tape to cd and preserved … now after nearly forty years, it was released on the Bill Evans 2cd Momentum, a title suggested by Nenette Evans, Bill’s widow: At the time of this recording in 1972, Bill was experiencing a momentous upswing in his personal life, his health, and his career, she remembered: so I would like to give the album the appropriate title of Momentum. Bill had performed twenty-one times (!) in The Netherlands, the liner notes learn. The first time in 1964 and the last time a year before he passed away. For a lot of Dutchmen the Tros Radio Sesjun programs will be remembered, featuring Bill Evans, like in 1973 and 1975 at the Boerenhofstede in Laren (The Netherlands) and De Meerkoet in Lelystad (The Netherlands). Parts of these concerts have been released last year in a 2cd album Bill Evans The Sesjun Radio Shows.
The Groningen Stadsschouwburg
Two concerts – two sets – a remarkable piano player with two great accompanists: Eddie Gomez, double bass player, part of the trio for 11 years since 1966 and Marty Morell, the up-and-coming drummer, who had just started in the trio at the Top of the Gate concert – Both albums contain almost 30 tracks ( only two are doubling: Bill’s composition Turn Out The Stars and the standard Emily). Two sets - two essentials - for each serious jazz fan, who has missed the opportunities to hear Bill Evans play live or just love to recall this sensation .....

The Dutch Jazz Archive in Amsterdam, up to this year part of the MCN, is sorely tried, due to economy measures by the Dutch governement - It even might be closed if we don't do anything ..... On the pretext of "Keep the Dutch Jazz History Alive", the Dutch Jazz Archive won't let it happen and asks Jazz fans to become a Friend of the Dutch Jazz Archive. The Keep (it) Swinging blog supports this initiative! ....
Most of Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Chet Baker and Bill Evans early recordings have been reissued in cheap budget boxes, a grab bag for collectors, but stabbed the serious record companies to the heart ...... Limetree and Resonance recently released two excellent live albums by the Bill Evans Trio, recorded in the Top of the Gate in New York City (1968) and the Stadsschouwburg in Groningen ( The Netherlands) - both in an excellent sound quality.Two essentials!
