Quatre Tickets de Swing was formed in late 1999 and consists of four musicians from the Zwolle area of The Netherlands. Since 2014 vocalist Inge Alberts has joined the ensemble and is now a permanent member at the quartet's live performances. Inge Alberts is also featured vocalist on the new CD shown above contributing great interpretations of highlights from Paris' rich musical heritage. The other members of Quatre Tickets de Swing are Peter Swart (clarinet, saxophones), Georg Lankester (solo guitar), Arthur Siero (rhythm guitar) and Eric van Buijsen (double bass)

Quatre Tickets de Swing is inspired by the French Hot Club tradition founded by Django Reinhardt a.o., but unlike many other ensembles in this genre, Quatre Tickets de Swing does not rate equilibristic guitar playing as the band's trademark. The trademark of the orchestra is melodios songs from the swing era and French chansons played with a deep sense and understanding of the simple beauty of the chosen musical themes. The vocal by Inge Alberts adds the final touch which convinces this listener that Quatre Tickets de Swing has chosen a musical profile that inspires and engages all members of the orchestra as well as its audience.

The tracklist of the new CD shows a selection of both swing standars like Ain't Misbehavin, Exactly Like You and I Surrender Dear and themes from Django's book, i.e. Fantasie sur un danse Norvégienne and Songe d'automne. The main part consists of songs associated with French chansons and Paris' nightlife - Cole Porter's Night And Day (- here sung in French) and C'est magnifique together with a seldom performed song by Sidney Bechet, Si tu vois ma mère. fit perfectly in with the remaining French repertoire. October 13th, 2013, one month ago,  a unique double concert in the Hot Club style had been scheduled.
The quartet of guitarist Fapy Lafertin with Lollo Meier did take place at a concert in Bathmen (near Deventer), invitated by Swing4all, which schedules a series of jazz concerts, entitled Jazz on a Sunday afternoon.

Quatre Tickets de Swing was invited as the  opening band. For a packed house, the group, completed by lady singer Ita Van Dijk, started the program. Quatre Tickets de Swing is a quartet that plays music in the gypsy swing tradition that creates the typical French atmosphere of the 1930s and 40s, bringing Django standards, including beautiful songs performed by Ita such as Ménilmontant and Domino.  These titles and more  can be found on its recent album Swinging & Singing.

After the break the well known Fapy Lafertin - Lollo Meier Quartet continued the concert. The quartet featured Fapy Lafertin and Lollo Meier solo guitar, Henri Schuler double bass and Bram Van Es rhythm guitar. This set could be best summarized up in a few words as a concert that offered the audience exciting improvisations by Fapy and Lollo in a virtuoso performance.

In the first set, the band played some Lollo Meier compositions, like Hondarribia as well as some well-known Django themes like Hungaria and Them There Eyes.

The second set  included titles like Are You In The Mood and Japanese Sandman as well as Fapy’s beautiful composition Plach’terida which surprised the audience. The latest album by the Fapy Lafertin-Lollo Meier Quartet is entitled Plach’terida
The final tune of the concert was entitled Les Yeux Noirs ( =Dark Eyes), which had an impressive intro by Fapy Lafertin .... a concert to remember!

Op 13 oktober j.l., een maand geleden, vonden  in Bathmen twee optredens plaats in het Hot Club genre. Hoofdmoot was het kwartet van de befaamde gitarist Fapy Lafertin met Lollo Meier en die gitaristen spelen niet vaak in deze regio. De organisatie was in handen van Swing4all die jazzconcerten houdt onder het motto Jazz on a Sunday afternoon.

 In een volledig volle zaal trad eerst Quatre Tickets de Swing op, mijn swingkwartet, deze dag aangevuld met Ita van Dijk, zang. De formatie bestaat uit klarinet/sax, twee akoestische gitaren en bas. Het was een sfeervol optreden met veel Django composities, eerst instrumentaal, maar voor een groot deel ook met zang van Ita, bijv. in het Frans gezongen nummers zoals Ménilmontant en Domino. Het Parijs van de jaren ‘30/40 herleefde, wat overigens ook te horen is op de nieuwe cd  Swinging & Singing dit voorjaar uitgebracht.

Na de pauze kwamen de gitaarvirtuozen aan bod. Wat een muzikaliteit en wat een indrukwekkende improvisaties werden door het kwartet van Fapy Lafertin gebracht. Afwisselend waren er soli van Fapy en Lollo te beluisteren begeleid door een zeer swingende ritmegroep. Ook brachten ze bepaalde passages tweestemmig, met precies de juiste timing.

In de eerste set zaten enkele composities van Lollo, zoals bijv. Hondarribia en natuurlijk veel titels van plaatopnamen van Django Reinhardt uit de jaren ’30 waaronder Hungaria en Them There Eyes.

Maar in de tweede set hoorde het publiek het prachtige Are You In The Mood en het vlotte Japanese Sandman, met als slot Fapy’s mooie compositie Plachterida (vlinder), schitterend gebracht.
Als toegift werd Les Yeux Noirs gespeeld in een verrassende versie nl. met een solo-intro van Fapy, later aangevuld met de andere musici van zijn kwartet. Het publiek genoot en geen wonder dat er staande ovaties waren voor dit kwartet. Dit was weer echt  zo’n concert dat je lang bijblijft!

De groep Quatre Tickets de Swing heeft onlangs haar nieuwste cd uitgebracht met een repertoire dat recht doet aan de sfeer en de muziek, zoals die in de jaren dertig en veertig in de jazzscene van Parijs geklonken moet hebben. Eerder verschenen A Touch of Django (2000-2001), Remembering Django & Hawk (2004) en Django Souvenirs (2009). Het kwartet werd opgericht in 1999 door Georg Lankester, die, behalve muzikant, ook regelmatig over vergeten Franse- en Belgische musici uit de Swing periode op de Keep (it) Swinging blog publiceert. Hij is autodidact op gitaar.

Georg Lankester mag zich verder expert noemen m.b.t. de geschiedenis van de Hot Club de France en specialiseerde zich in de carrière van Django Reinhardt. Dankzij deze interesses stond hij in 1983 aan de wieg van de Nederlandse "Hot Club de France".  Door die fascinatie voor de muziek van Django cs. werd de Quartre Tickets de Swing opgericht, met het doel om de sfeer van de Hot Club swing te doen herleven, door de muziek opnieuw voor het voetlicht te brengen ....  soms relaxt, dan weer melodieus of juist ritmisch swingend, maar altijd vol respect aan de muzikale erfenis van die tijd. De muziek is geschikt om op te dansen, om te luisteren of gewoon als achtergrond tijdens een ontspannen samenzijn ....  De tekening op de hoes van de cd, gemaakt en ontworpen door Marina Lankester, geeft de ambiance treffend weer ........ Het Parijs van de jaren dertig en veertig, met cafés en cabarets, ingekleurd door een ensemble á la Quatre Tickets de Swing.

Naast Georg Lankester als oprichter en sologitarist van de Quatre Tickets de Swing, bestaat de groep verder uit Peter Swart op tenorsax en klarinet, Arthur Siero op ritmegitaar, Eric van Buijsen op bas en Ita van Dijk, die op een aantal nummers van de band zingt.

  Op de nieuwe cd laat Ita van Dijk op een zestal nummers haar fijne stem horen; vijf nummers uit de periode van de Parijse musical en cabaret scene van de jaren dertig, gezongen in accentloos Frans: Chez moi van Paul Misraki, de Jean Sablon hit Vous qui passez sans me voir, Charles Trenet's populaire Ménilmontant, de klassieke musette Domino van Louis Ferrari en Django Reinhardt's en Stephane Grappelli's Larmes (Tears); de populaire swing standard Undecided van Charles Shavers ( met tekst van S. Robin) laat Ita horen in het Engels. De rest van de cd, die veertien titels omvat, zijn instrumentale nummers, zoals de drie gewijd aan Django Reinhardt: Manoir de mes rêves, Mélodie au Crépuscule en Troublant Boléro en het bekende Fleur de Lavande van gitarist Fapy Lafertin. De rest zijn vier standards uit het American songbook te weten: You're driving me crazy, Body and Soul, Please be kind en Sugar. Peter Swart speelt in de instrumentale nummers de leadpartij op tenorrsax en klarinet, mooi uitgevoerd met een warme en melodieuse toon. Zijn tenorsaxspel in Body and Soul fascineert en ademt de sfeer van de muziek van  Coleman Hawkins, die er in 1939 een hit mee had. Op de meeste nummers vullen Georg Lankester en Peter Swart om beurten de solo's in, waarbij Georg's gitaarsolo's opvallen door een zorgvuldige invulling en uitvoering, waarbij de ritmesectie ( ritmegitarist Arthur Siero en bassist Eric van Buijsen) alle ruimte krijgt om hun solide swingende basis te laten horen.

Het nieuwe album van Quatre Tickets de Swing, getiteld Swinging & Singing, doet zijn naam alle eer aan ....  het bevat een uur swingende standards, die in de jaren dertig en veertig van de vorige eeuw populair waren in de Franse jazzscene. Op zes nummers wordt het ensemble aangevuld met vocaliste Ita van Dijk. Het album, met zijn opvallende hoes, waarop de sfeer van de muziek treffend is weergegeven, bevat verder instrumentale nummers, uit het Europese swingtijdperk, goed gespeeld en geschikt om te luisteren of te dansen ..... The Dutch jazzensemble Quatre Tickets de Swing has recently released their 3rd cd with a repertoire that reflects the atmosphere of the 1930s and 1940s popular music of the Parisian jazzscene.The quartet was founded in 1999 by Georg Lankester, who may be familar to readers of the keep(it)swinging blog as a contributor of well researched articles on famous European jazzmusicians of the swing era.

Georg Lankester is moreover an expert on everything concerning the Hot Club de France organisation and has specialized in the career of Django Reinhardt. This interest led him to found the Dutch branch of the HCF in 1983, and as a self taught guitarist Georg later formated the Quatre Tickets de Swing extending his passion for the music of Django and his time as an active part-time musician. The goal of the Quatre Tickets de Swing is to relive the atmosphere of the Hot Club swing by playing music that is sometimes cheerfully swinging, in other moments relaxed and melodius, but always executed with passion. The music is designed for both dancing, wining and dining as well as your casual listening enjoyment. The artwork of the front of the new CD expresses exactly the ambiance of the tradition that brought this branch of European swing to a success with the public: the Parisian café and cabaret with live music performance by an ensemble just like the Quatre Tickets de Swing.

Besides Georg Lankester as leader and solo guitarist of Quatre Tickets de Swing, the ensemble consists of Peter Swart on tenor saxophone and clarinet, Arthur Siero on rhythm guitar, Eric van Buijsen on string bass and has Ita van Dijk added as a vocalist on some of the repertoire of the orchestra.

On the new CD Ita van Dijk contributes with her pleasant singing on six tracks, five pieces from the 1930s Paris musichall and cabaret scene sung in perfect French: 'Chez moi' by Paul Misraki, the Jean Sablon hit 'Vous qui passez sans me voir', Charles Trenet's popular 'Ménilmontant', the musette classic 'Domino' by Louis Ferrari and Django and Grappelli's 'Larmes' (Tears); the popular swing classic 'Undecided' by Charles Shavers and with lyrics by S. Robin finally has Ita's singing in English. - The remain repertoire of the CD's 14 tracks are devoted to three famous instrumentals by Django Reinhardt: 'Manoir de mes rêves', 'Mélodie au Crépuscule' and 'Troublant Boléro', further 'Fleur de Lavande' by guitarist Fapy Lafertin and finally four standard swing classics from the

American book: 'You're driving me crazy', 'Body and Soul', 'Please be kind' and 'Sugar'. - Peter Swart has the lead voice on tenor sax or clarinet at the instrumental pieces, very well executed with a warm and melodius tone in all tunes -  his tenor sax playing on 'Body and Soul' stands out with a beutiful interpretation of the theme reflecting and inspired by the playing of Coleman Hawkins, who made the song a hit in 1939. Georg Lankester shares solo spots with Peter Swart's reeds on most tunes, his guitar solos are carefully designed and executed leaving space for pausing and improvisation keeping time with the solid manouche rhythm playing by Arthur Siero on second guitar and Eric van Buijsen's swinging double bass.
