Northsea Jazzfestival: Een weerzien met oude legenden

EEN UNIEK FESTIVAL: Voor elk wat wils
Vrijdag 6 juli 2012: De Jazzhistorie herleeft
Hans Koert

McCoy Tyner ( Hudson - Ahoy) (Rotterdam) ( foto: Hans Koert)

Ravi Coltrane  v.l.n.r.: Gerald Cannon - Ravi Coltrane - Montez Coleman ( Hudson - Ahoy) (Rotterdam) ( foto: Hans Koert)

Het Ron Carter Golden Striker Trio ( v.l.n.r.: Donald Vega - Ron Carter - Russell Malone) ( Madeira - Ahoy)(Rotterdam) ( foto: Hans Koert)

McCoy Tyner Trio + Ravi Coltrane ( v.l.n.r.: McCoy Tyner - Gerald Cannon - Montez Coleman en Ravi Coltane) ( foto: Hans Koert)

North Sea Jazz: Festival of legends

A FESTIVAL THAT SUITS ALL TASTES
Friday 6th of July 2012: The night of the Jazz legends
Hans Koert

North Sea Jazz: Festival of Legends (English) | Northsea Jazzfestival: Een weerzien met oude legenden (Nederlands)

The North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam, scheduled for the 100,000th time, the host of the Hudson hall in the Ahoy building in Rotterdam, stretched the truth, must be one of the largest jazz festival of the world with ten thousands of visitors each year. Three days, with more then eight hours of music each day - new music - old music - great names - young promising musicians - dozen stages with boiling concerts and almost 45 concerts to select each day .......

The audience in the Hudson Hall - Ahoy (Rotterdam) ( Friday the 6th of July, 2012) (photo courtesy: Hans Koert)

Although the festival is still labeled as a Jazz festival a lot of other music styles are scheduled: from blues, funk, brass, modern creative, singer songwriters, soul, world music up to hiphop - it's all there. The classic jazz styles. the music which developed in the post-war years, is still scheduled, but not as much as twenty years ago, when great names like Dizzy Gillespie, a young Michael BreckerDon Cherry and Gerry Mulligan joined the festival - they are all gone now. But each jazz fan will find enough concerts that will surprise and fascinate him or her. This is my selection for the first festival day: Friday the 6th of July, 2012  ......

The Flat Earth Society with Ernst Reijseger. f.l.t.r.: Ernst Reijseger - Kristof Roseeuw -Bruno Vansina - nn (3x) ( Hudson hall - Ahoy) (Rotterdam) (photo courtesy: Hans Koert)

Our first festival day started in the Hudson hall with a concert by the Belgian Flat Earth Society, featuring the famous Dutch violoncello player Ernst Reijseger. The music played by the Flat Earth Society is a mix of free jazz, world music, film music, humor and free improvisations - a musical style hard to label, developed in the 1970s and 1980s by Dutch bands like the Instant Composers Pool or the Willem Breuker Kollektief - the latter now part of history after the death of its leader, Willem Breuker.  The Flat Earth Society is a great representative for this music, which surprises the audience. Ernst Reijseger is a genius on his instrument, the violoncello, which he can sound in hunderd different ways, even played a guitar - a great opener for this first festival day.

McCoy Tyner ( Hudson hall - Ahoy) (Rotterdam) ( photo courtesy: Hans Koert)

The second concert, in the Hudson too, was reserved for McCoy Tyner, 73 years old, who brought his quartet featuring Ravi Coltrane, introduced as the son of his former employer John Coltrane and young lions Gerald Cannon and Montez Coleman in the rhythm section. It was great to hear this legend, who played since the late 1950s in bands like the Benny Golson-Art Farmer Jazztet and the John Coltrane Quartet to perform for a live audience ........ more then 50 years of jazz history in front of you.

Ravi Coltrane  f.l.t.r.: Gerald Cannon - Ravi Coltrane - Montez Coleman ( Hudson hall - Ahoy) (Rotterdam) ( photo courtesy: Hans Koert)

It was great to listen to Ravi Coltrane, the third son of the legendary John and Alice Coltrane, who lost his father at the age of two, but took his instrument, the tenor saxophone, to follow in his father's footsteps. It was a surprise to listen to McCoy and Ravi's version of Naima, if my memory serves me well ......, a well known tune played by John Coltrane and McCoy Tyner in numerous live sessions early 1960s.

Rita Reys and the Trio Peter Beets ( f.l.t.r.: Joost Patocka - Ruud Jacobs - Rita Reys - Peter Beets) ( Madeira - Ahoy) ( Rotterdam) ( photo courtesy: Hans Koert)

The third concert was scheduled in the Madeira with 87 years young Rita Reys, European First Lady of Jazz, who has won their spurs in jazz since the 1950s, when she was the leading Dutch jazz vocalist in the European jazz scene, and recorded with the Wessel Ilcken Combo of her late husband drummer Wessel Ilcken and since the late `959 with the Pim Jacobs Trio, featuring Pim and Ruud Jacobs and Wim Overgauw at the guitar.
Now, more then 50 years later, she still sings, a young girl in a slightly older body, as the host of the evening labeled her, with Ruud Jacobs on the base and the Dutch Oscar Peterson Peter Beets at the piano ...... and Joost Patocka on drums. A great concert by the still widely popular vocal legend Rita Reys.

The final concert was also scheduled in the Madeira: Ron Carter's Golden Striker Trio. He was interviewed by his biographer and Downbeat editor Dan Quelette in the NRC Jazz Café earlier that evening about his latest album with his Ron Carter's Great Big Band ..... Although Ron played the double bass at more then 2,500 album, he never recorded his own big band record. Ron Carter finished the evening with a concert by his Golden Striker Trio featuring  the Nicaraguan-born American jazz pianist Donald Vega and guitarist Russell Malone.

Ron Carter, now the leading double bass player of the jazz scene in the world, a living legend, who played with Miles Davis, Eric Dolphy, Cannonball Adderley, Herbie Hancock, Bobby Timmons and Randy Weston, to list some of the names in jazz history, is, among all those other giants I heard this Friday in Rotterdam - from McCoy Tyner up to Rita Reys, the personification, the link to the past - the period in which the modern jazz, the 1950s and 1960s, was created ....... It brings me the spirit of the past!

McCoy Tyner Trio + Ravi Coltrane ( f.l.t.r.: McCoy Tyner - Gerald Cannon - Montez Coleman and Ravi Coltane) ( photo courtesy: Hans Koert)

A great final concert of an impressive first festival day with only great legends in jazz. I didn't hear that night Lee Konitz, Joshua Redman, Joe Lovano, John Scofield, Dave Douglas, Brian Blade, Joey Baron and James Carter, to list a selection of other great jazz men in the house, but visiting North Sea Jazz Festival, the largest indoor Jazz Festival of the world,  learns that you have to make your own selections - a rather impracticable task.

The photos in this blog are made with my cell-phone and low-fi, due to the fact that semi-professional camera's are not allowed to bring into the festival without a written press accreditation.

The North Sea Jazz Festival belongs to the top music festivals of the world. Although the name suggests, Jazz is no longer the main music style that can be heard - the festival schedules dozens of music styles, from Funk, Hip Hop and Fusion to World Music, Jazz and Modern Creative, but the more (common) jazz fan, will find dozens of concerts that can fascinate and surprise him. For me, the first day of the 2012 edition was the night of the jazz legends ......

Ben Powell - New Street

... including a tribute to STÉPHANE GRAPPELLI
I'm inspired by the violin sound ( Ben Powell)
Hans Koert

Recently the British born US violin player Ben Powell released his second album entitled New Street, an album which features a special tribute to the man who inspired him as a twelve years young boy: Stéphane Grappelli.
The Ben Powell Quartet features the Japanese piano player Tadataka Unno, which he met at the Betty Carter Jazz Ahead Program, a protégé of the late Hank Jones; double bass player Aaron Darrell and Devin Drobka on drums. Three tracks are dedicated to the music of Stéphane Grappelli featuring the so-called Stéphane Grappelli Tribute Trio: Ben Powell violin - Gary Burton vibraphone and Julian Lage guitar.
Ben Powell - New Street ( photo courtesy: Ryan MacDonald)

He started to play the violin as a two years old boy, raised in Chellenham in southwest England, in a family in which the violin was very important, as his mother is a violin teacher and his father a classical cellist.  Classical music still plays an important part in Ben Powell's career, but he also played tribute to the gypsy jazz, like celebrating Django's 100th birthday in a trio with Jonathan Joubert and Jack Soref a couple of years ago and he also founded his own Hammond organ trio ......

Trained in classical music by his mother, he became fascinated by the sound of the great French Stéphane Grappelli, who was Django Reinhardts duo-partner in the Hot Club du France recordings for years, and who performed, even in his old age, with dozens of jazz musicians. Stéphane Grappelli pasted away, fifteen years ago, 89 years old, when Ben was still a ten years old schoolboy, unfamilar with his music - it was a teacher at his Junior school who invited him a few years later to listen to Grappelli.  I was captivated, Ben remembers, by Grappelli's freedom and swinging rhythm. He started to learn to play like this old genius on the jazz violin and aurally transcribed what he heard.
Stéphane Grappelli ( 1908-1997) (photo courtesy: David Landy)

Ben, awarded with The Most Valuable String Player Award, while in Berklee college, was inspired, as he said, by the great classical violinists like David Oistrakh, Michael Rabin and Itzhak Perlman but also by jazz musicians like Joe Lovano, while at Berklee, Stéphane Grappelli, mentioned before and the Roman gypsy jazz violinist Florin Niculescu ......... I'm inspired by the violin sound and the violin isn't musically a traditional jazz instrument so for me it was how do I .... celebrate the violin though this record as an instrument fits into the contemporary jazz ( Ben Powell)

Ben released his first album a few years ago, entitled Light, which he recorded with his quartet and quintet, and contained mostly French tunes and standards from the 1930s up to the 1950s. He loved to record some of his own compositions, which are now available on his latest album, New Street. This album features  four own compositions like the great ballad Judith (with a small reference to his classical roots at the end)  and a standard like What Is This Thing Called Love, which refers to the French gypsy tradition, due to guest player gypsy guitarist Adrien Moignard - it's one of my most favorite tracks on the album.

 Gary Burton (source: listal.com)

Ben Powell loved to make a tribute to his source of inspiration Stéphane Grappelli. While studying in Berklee, he was introduced to veteran vibe player Gary Burton, who had recorded with Stéphane Grappelli in Paris, November 1969 (Paris Encounter). Gary told him that Stéphane had written a composition, dedicated to him, entitled Gary, which he had recorded in Paris in December 1970 with a quartet featuring Marc Hemmeler, Jack Sewing and Kenny ClarkeGary had framed the composition in his study and never had recorded it himself. As Ben loved to make a tribute to Grappelli, they decided to record it for the very first time together and it is now released, with La Chanson des Rues ( with a vocal by guest vocalist Linda Calise) and the great Piccadilly Stomp, which Stéphane recorded once in London October 1945 with George Shearing at the piano: The Stéphane Grappelli Tribute Trio, features Ben, Gary and Julian Lage ( on guitar).

Enjoy a fragment of a trailer in which Ben introduces his music and his latest album New Street.

This young talented violin player, Ben Powell, fascinated by arranging and composing, one foot firmly planted in the classical music and the other in the jazz scene, inspired by the great legendary Stéphane Grappelli, surprised me with this album. You can order his albums at Amazon or  CD-Baby

This album surprised me - this young talented violin player, inspired by the sound of veteran violist Stéphane Grappelli, known for his cooperation with Django Reinhardt, has released its second album entitled New Street and features his quartet in some own compositions and standards, which learn that this promising violin player is ready for a great career as a jazz artist. He tributes with his Stephane Grappelli Tribute Trio with veteran vibraphone player Gary Burton the legendary French violinist Stéphane Grapelli who passed away fifteen years ago ........

The Making of ...... Losse Eindjes: Leola Felton

Wie was Leola Felton?
Hans Koert

The making of ..... loose ends (Engels) | The making of ... losse eindjes: Leola Felton (Nederlands)

( verzameling: Hans Koert )

Julia en Ruth Brock ( als: Julia Paull and Ruth Paull: The Paull Sisters) ( Hans Koert archief)

( foto: Russ Shore)

Een flink aantal jaren geleden ontving ik van Russ Shore een kopie van een gelegenheidsopname, mogelijk een promotieplaat, zonder label informatie, waarop een live-opname stond  van een pianist Leola Felton, die het nummer St. Louis Blues speelt in de Connie's Inn (New York City).  Deze club was begin jaren dertig gevestigd aan de 2221 Seventh Avenue / West 131st Street in New York City, vlak naar het Lafayette Theatre. Deze club, opgericht door Jack Goldberg als The Shuffle Inn begin jaren twintig, was een club waar, in 1930, grote orkesten als die van Fletcher Henderson speelden. Vanuit de club werden ook live-programma's uitgezonden door WBC radio, dus mogelijk is de live-opname op de kartonnen duriumplaat daarvan een fragment. Op de plaat is een gesproken introductie, waarop de aankondiger zegt: We bring you Leola Fenton from Connie’s Inn and this time she’s going to play for you her favorite number the St. Louis Blues, waarna er een piano-uitvoering komt van de St. Louis Blues;

Connie's Inn  aan de 2221 Seventh Avenue at West 131st Street - New York City ( foto: nycago.org)

Interieur Connie's Inn ( foto: nycago.org)

Daarop vinden we: Leola Felton - pianist - a res(ident) - 249 North Willow.

The Millers: Dutch jazz sextet dir. by Ab De Molenaar (1945-1961) - Gone ....

Popular postwar DUTCH Jazz sextet reissued from early in the evening until the wee small hours of the morning, night after night, it threw a party (source: liner notes De 28 Beste van de Millers (1982))

The Dutch Doctor Jazz Magazine, recently released its nineth album dedicated to the Dutch jazz band The Millers, directed by Ab De Molenaar: The Millers 1945-1961 onder leiding van Ab de Molenaar: Gone .... ( DJ 009)

The Millers onder leiding van Ab de Molenaar (1945-1961) - Gone... (DJ 009)(cover design: Egbert Luijs)

The Millers or Miller Sextet was founded by De Molenaar brothers ( Miller is the English word for the Dutch word Molenaar), Ab and Jochem, late 1930s as The Two Millers and during the Second World War period they performed as The Miller Quartet. That first quartet featured Ab De Molenaar on guitar, Jochem De Molenaar on bass, Joop Maten piano and Sanny Day as the vocalist.
Sanny Day, her name sounds like a pseudonym, but it isn't: she was born July 1921 as Sanny Elizabeth Day, labels the Millers, as a ritmesectie die muziek maakte, (= a rhythm section that makes music) - something rather unusual in those days. She had made her debut in the Amsterdam Sheherazade club with Manke Nelis, Maria Zamora and Jan Blok - the first two would become vaudeville artists and the latter a sought after accompanist on his guitar. At a concert by Freddy Johnson, who worked for some months in the Negro Palace in Amsterdam 1939, she was invited to sing: Please Be Kind ... Sanny Day, who had married Ab De Molenaar, can be heard on nine tracks.  After her divorce from Ab she left the Millers  mid 1950s, to make room for Suzie Møller, a vocalist Ab had met in Garmish-Partenkirchen - she can be heard on three tracks ..... Jochem De Molenaar, Ab's two years older brother, left the band in 1942 after a hell of a row, Sanny told Cor Gout.  (source: Muziek in zwart-wit - Cor Gout)

During the German occupation of The Netherlands the quartet was extended with musicians like Coen Van Nassou, who played the vibraphone and Willy Van Der Mandele ( aka Jan Doedel) on violin. This Miller Sextet was very succesfull in The Hague and Scheveningen, the beach resort near the Dutch coast. They were invited to play in dance clubs, where they played their popular dutchified swinging music, Junglemuziek, as an inspector from the DutchNazi Kultuurkamer labeled the music at a concert in the Gebouw van Kunsten en Wetenschappen.  Late 1943 the band visited the Van Der Wouw studio where they debuted on a series of glass based acetates, which were released on four Sonante Records, exclusively distributed by The Bijenkorf, the well known Dutch department stores. Two songs from that series became hits: Zomernachtfeest and Als sterren fonk'ren.

The album Gone ..!., compiled by Skip Voogd, grand old man of Dutch jazz journalistics for ages, responsable for the liner notes and Ben Kragting jr., chief editor of Doctor Jazz Magazine, open this compilation with two tracks recorded on glass based acetates at the GTB ( = G.T. Bakker) studios, March 1945: Wenn Der Weisse Flieder Wieder Blüht and Angelina.
This reissue of Miller originals, contains reissues of 1946 Decca, Telefunken ( 1953) or Columbia ( 1958-1959) records, but also numerous unreleased recordings, like air checks for the US troups in Charleroi (Belgium) (1945) and a concert for the Nederlandse Strijdkrachten (1948), the Dutch soldiers.

The Miller Sextet was, with the Ramblers, the Dutch Swing College Band (still alive an kicking all around the world) and the Pia Beck Trio ( Pia was a member of The Millers too, during the second half of the 1940s) one of the most popular bands of The Netherlands. The music they played was a mix of swing á la the Hot Club de France, Light Music up to the more modern mainstream jazz styles of the 1950s and 1960s. I remembered that I was fascinated by its sound, its swing, the voice of Sanny Day, the vibraphone of Coen Van Nassau, but, above all,  that music was ......  fun, real fun in the hands of The Millers. Jazz as hard to understand music was not the Millers way. I still associate tunes like Take A Letter Miss Smith and I Told Ya I Love Ya to this band and this period. They had some hits during the 1940s, like Liefde in Rhythme (1947), Chickery Chick (1946) and the forementioned 's Avonds bij het licht der sterren ( 1944)

The album Gone contains 24 tracks by the Miller Sextet and a bonus track of a meeting by the vocal group The Mellow Mills, which featured Sanny Day, Pia Beck, Eddy Doorenbos and Paul Schwippert with the Seymour Östervalls Orkester in Stockholm (Sweden), March 1948.

Skip Voogd offers very informative liner notes ( in Dutch only) which tells the story of The Millers, with a lot of information about the bands strength and its successes. He looks in the liner notes for a psychological explanation for the fact why so many people raised in the 1940s and 1950s stil love this music, this Miller sound. ( = After that period your musical taste won't change any more and the music, popular in your youth, will stay the music you like most.)
A Dutch reissue LP album, entitled De 28 beste van de Millers, confirms this  theory in its liner notes:  De teeners (sic) van toen, zijn de vijftigers van nu (= 1982), de mensen die hun muziek steeds moeizamer kunnen bemachtigen. (= The teenagers from the 1940s are in their fifties now (1982) and this music is nowadays hard to find in record shops.) (= Do you still remember the places where the Millers played?) (= During the summer season they played in the Kakatoe-club at the Gevers-Denootplein in Scheveningen ( the beach resort of The Hague) and in winter at De Wiek in Rotterdam.) ( = From early in the evening until the wee hours of the morning, night after night, it threw a party .... ). It's all gone now, but the memory lingers on  ........: Gone .... The Millers (1945-1961) onder leiding van Ab de Molenaar ( DJ 09)

Audio engineer Harry Coster, one of the compilers of this disc, is responsable for the transfers of this rare material. He did a good job, as the sound is excellent.

This great album can be ordered at the website of the Doctor Jazz Magazine,
but also in the record shops of FAME, (Amsterdam) and the Bijenkorf in Rotterdam and Amsterdam

The Dutch Millers band, or The Miller Sextet, belonged, together with the Ramblers and the Dutch Swing College Band to the most popular traditional jazz and swing bands of the post war period. Its music had swing and its sound was easy recognizable and accessible. Do you remember its concerts? the liner notes of a 1982 Dutch LP-album reads: During the summer season they played in the Kakatoe-club at the Gevers-Denootplein in Scheveningen ( the beach resort of The Hague) and in winter at De Wiek in Rotterdam. From early in the evening until the wee hours of the morning, night after night, it threw a party .... - "Gone ..!", It's all gone now, but the memory lingers on........ Doctor Jazz Magazine revives these sweet memories with: The Millers onder leiding van Ab de Molenaar (1945-1961) - Gone ...!
