Equinox ……. Als je dit woord opzoekt in een encyclopedie dan ontdek je dat het te maken heeft met het zich tweemaal per jaar manifesterende verschijnsel dat de zon in maart en oktober recht boven de evenaar staat ………. Maar voor mij is het, sinds ik hun eersteling Here & Now hoorde, de naam van een bijzonder interessante groep, die dezelfde naam draagt - Equinox - en haar thuisbasis heeft in Den Haag. Onlangs verscheen hun tweede album: Face The Music.

Het kwintet werd in 2006 opgericht door de Amerikaanse gitarist Dan Nicholas en de Ierse bassist Johnny Daly, die, beiden studerend aan het Koninklijk Haags Conservatorium, onder de indruk waren van de hoge kwaliteit van de musici uit de Nederlandse jazz scene. In september 2008 bracht Equinox, toen nog een kwartet met de twee stichters en twee Amerikaanse musici ( Chris Johansen op sax en A. J. Davis op slagwerk) hun debuutalbum uit, getiteld Here & Now; vijf jaar later presenteerde de groep, een kwintet nu, de lang verwachte opvolger: Face the Music. Equinox bestaat uit Dan Nicholas op de gitaar - Johnny Daly bas - Sjoerd Dijkhuizen tenorsax – Bob Wijnen piano en Marcel Serierse slagwerk.

Tien nummers, in feite dertien, de meeste standards, vinden we er op terug, van Mingus’ eerbetoon aan Monk ( Jump Monk), midden jaren vijftig tijdens een live concert in de Café Bohemia vastgelegd op een Debut lp tot Who Killed Cock Robin?, dat voor het eerst werd vastgelegd op een Blue Note uit 1960 van pianist Freddy Redd. Tot mijn favorieten horen de mooie ballad Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most en een zelden vastgelegde compositie van Tina Brooks, Open Sesame, dat toch erg bekend is geworden door Freddie Hubbard’s versie op zijn gelijknamige Blue Noteplaat uit 1960. Dit soort nummers karakteriseert de sfeer van deze plaat ……. Heerlijke jazz uit de hoogtijdagen van de jazz uitgebracht op labels als Blue Note

Speciale gast in I Think It’s Time To Say Goodbye Again is de Zuid-Afrikaanse zangeres, nu woonachtig in Antwerpen, Tutu Puoane. Het laatste nummer, As Long As There’s Music, werd geselecteerd ter nagedachtenis aan de onlangs overleden pianist Frans Elsen, die vaak mee speelde tijdens concerten georganiseerd door Dan en Johnny. Frans nam dit nummer nog op met het Axel Hagen Quintet in 2006.

De kers op de taart is echter de extra DVD, die bij de CD is gevoegd met daarop drie tracks, die opgenomen en gefilmd zijn tijdens een optreden in Dublin begin 2012. Drie nummers, waarvan twee standards en één compositie van gitarist Dan Nicholas, die ook verantwoordelijk is voor de titelsong van het album: Face The Music en het nummer Round and Round …. Deze DVD is mooi gemaakt … drie nummers, behalve de Dan Nicholas compositie Keepers of the Flame ook het nummer Down Through The Years, een compositie van Clifford Jordan uit 1961 en het nummer One Flight Down, gecomponeerd door pianist Cedar Walton, beide uitgebracht op de Jazzland LP van het Clifford Jordan Quintet ( juni 1961). Een DVD toegevoegd aan een audio-cd is op zich niks vreemds anno 2013, maar deze opnamen uit Dublin zijn gemaakt in zwart-wit en dat geeft perfect de sfeer van de muziek aan – de sfeer van een rokerige jazzclub uit de jaren vijftig - een tijd toen roken nog bij de gezonde gewoonten hoorde ( een tevreden roker ....), alleen mis ik de kringelende rook van een brandende sigaret tussen de lippen van de slagwerker, zoals de sfeerfoto’s van fotografen als Francis Wolff vaak typeren ….

Equinox, een enthousiaste groep musici uit Den Haag, debuteerde vijf jaar geleden met een opvallend album Here & Now; onlangs verscheen hun tweede: Face The Music met meer dan twaalf nummers jazz, die de sfeer van de jaren vijftig en zestig, de tijd van de beroemde Blue Notealbums, doet herleven - De bijgevoegde dvd brengt, als kers op de taart, beelden uit een mooi vastgelegd concert. Een CD-DVD die niet in je platenkast mag ontbreken.....

Equinox ……. Most of you will relate this name to an astronomical event rather than to a jazz quintet ….. Well, for me, since I heard its first album Here & Now Equinox is a group of jazz musicians that heads of the list of bands I love to hear in concert …… A few weeks ago its latest album Face The Music was released.

This quintet, based in The Hague, was founded by the American guitarist Dan Nicholas and the Irish bass player Johnny Daly. In 2006 both jazz musicians, impressed by the rich Dutch jazz climate organized high level live jazz concerts in The Hague. In September 2008 Equinox, a quartet featuring the two founding members and two US musicians ( Chris Johansen on sax and A. J. Davis on drums) debuted on record with their album Equinox and now, five years later, the group, a quintet now, presents itself at its latest album Face the Music.
Equinox features Dan Nicholas at the guitar - Johnny Daly double bass – Sjoerd Dijkhuizen tenor saxophone – Bob Wijnen piano and Marcel Serierse drums.

Ten tracks, in fact thirteen, most standards, have been selected, like Jump Monk, a tribute Charles Mingus wrote mid 1950s for Thelonious Monk; Who Killed Cock Robin? debuted by Freddie Redd’s Quartet at a 1960 Blue Note; the great ballad Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most and a great version of Tina Brooks composition Open Sesame, which became known as the title song of Freddy Hubbard’s 1960 Blue Note album; the latter belongs to my favorites of this album – a tune which characterizes the selections Equinox made ……. What might be the reason that this composition is recorded but few times during the past half century?

Special guest in I Think It’s Time To Say Goodbye Again is the South African vocalist Tutu Puoane, now living in Antwerp. The final track, As Long As There’s Music, was selected in remembering the Dutch piano player Frans Elsen, who recently passed away. He was a regular guest at the piano stool at the Equinox live concerts. Frans recorded this tune in 2006 with the Axel Hagen Quartet …..

What a surprise to learn that Equinox also released a DVD, part of the album, with three more tracks to this audio album, recorded on film at a 2012 concert in Ireland? Three tunes, two standards and one composition by guitarist Dan Nicholas, who is also responsible for the title song of the album: Face The Music and Round and Round …. This DVD is really a great surprise ..... it contains three tunes, except Keepers of the Flame, the Dan Nicholas composition, also the 1961 Clifford Jordan composition Down Through The Years and the great One Flight Down, a Cedar Walton compositions, both recorded for the very first time at a Jazzland LP by the Clifford Jordan Quintet ( June 1961). A DVD as an extra is not unique now a days, but these three fragments from a 2012 Dublin concert, shot in black and white, expresses the atmosphere of the jazz music as played in the 1950s in small clubs in the States ….. like the black and white Blue Note photos by Francis Wolff …. The only thing missing is the smoke of the cigarettes …..

Equinox, a The Hague based jazz quintet, released, five years after its debut with the album Here & Now, a new album entitled Face The Music - more then a dozen tracks, on a cd and a dvd, recorded live, brings back the atmosphere of the music of the 1950 Blue Note Jazz era .... A must have!
