Jacob Fischer Trio - Two CDs Recorded In Two Days!

Jacob Fischer (photo: Ina Løndal)
The Danish jazz guitarist Jacob Fischer (b 1967) made his debut at the Copenhagen jazz festival at 17 and has since then been one of the hardest working musicians in Scandinavia. Jacob Fischer has worked with the best Scandinavian musicians as well as with visiting jazz greats. His versatile virtuosity can be heard on about 200 CDs. Since 1992 he has been a member of violin legend Svend Asmussens quartet and in 2008 he finally decided to release his first album in his own name, Jacob Fischer Trio featuring Svend Asmussen. This was followed by two more CDs by a Jacob Fischer Trio recorded in Copenhagen, in 2010 was released a CD titled Blues featuring Jacob Fischer's Organ Trio and in 2011 the CD titled Django - a tribute to the Gypsy legend featuring accordionist Francesco Cali. During a guest performance at The Fourth Annual Arbors Records Invitational Jazz Party (Fl., USA) in January 2012 Jacob Fischer recorded a CD titled Guitarist under his own name featuring fellow guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli in a quartet setting. More about the mentioned CDs at the official website, here.

Jacob Fischer has toured Scandinavia, Great Britain, Japan, Brazil and several European countries and he has recorded with internationally acclaimed musicians both in Denmark and abroad. In June 2013, he was in New York to record material for the Japanese Venus Records to be released in Japan, the recordings were done in two days, June 20 and 21, and the recorded material was released on two CDs in Japan later that year. Now the music of both CDs finally is available outside Japan and accessible for purchase at Amazon, Itunes a.o.
CD-front: My Romance (Venus Records, VHCD-1132)
As mentioned, the two days recording session in New York was released on two CDs, in all 25 tracks of which 13 are accessible on the shown My Romance, a tribute album to the inventive jazz piano player, Bill Evans. Jacob Fischer is accompanied by double bass player Martin Wind  and drummer Tim Horner, both acclaimed and New York based musicians.

The repertoire of the disc is concentrated on ballads and lyrical standards like the title tune by Richard Rodgers and there are four compositions in this genre by Bill Evans, "Time Remembered" and "Waltz For Debby", further "Show Type Tune" and "Interplay". Bill Evans and Miles Davis' collaboration is remembered in a reading of Davis' "Nardis" and modern jazz ballads like "I Fall In Love Too Easily" (Styne/Kahn), "My Foolish Heart" (V. Young), "Come Rain Or Come Shine" (H. Arlen) and "Polka Dots And Moonbeams" (J. Van Heusen) are also presented, the last mentioned as a solo guitar piece. A complete tracklist is available here.
Tim Horner - photo: Tim Horner website
The complex yet lyrical interpretation of the music reflects Bill Evans' ideas of using standard jazz tunes as a stepstone for reharmonisation and modulations of themes thus creating a tonal improvisation and motivic development of the music. This consept of jazz improvisation resembles the ideas applied by other modern jazz piano players like Thelonius Monk and Bud Powell, however, each of them are distinct and different in their own specific way, of course. Here on the CD by Jacob Fischer Trio no piano is playing, nevertheless Fischer's guitar playing reflects Evans' ideas convinsingly with great support by his two sidemen. Fischer's approach reminds me of fellow guitarist Lenny Breau, who also excelled in the exploration of jazz and standard tunes with ideas
from the field developed by modern piano players like Bill Evans a.o..
CD-front: Black Orpheus (Venus Records, VHCD-1138)
The second CD from Jacob Fischer Trio recorded in the June 20 and 21 New York session is titled Black Orpheus  containing 12 tracks of Brazilian or Brazilian inspired tunes and may be considered a tribute to bossa nova and the roots of this style of music. Jacob Fischer, guitar, is again accompanied by Martin Wind on double bass, however, Brazilian drummer Duduka Da Fonseca has replaced Tim Horner.

The title track of the CD refers to the famous 1959 film Orfeu Negro made in Brazil by French director Marcel Camus based on the play Orfeu da Conceição by Vinicius de Moraes, which is an adaptation of the Greek legend of Orpheus and Eurydice, set in the modern context of a favela in Rio de Janeiro during Carnaval. The film is particularly noted for its soundtrack by two Brazilian composers, Antônio Carlos Jobim and Luiz Bonfá, who - together with vocalist João Gilberto -  introduced the bossa nova internationally with this film. The music from the film has since been absorbed in the standard jazz repertoire and recorded numerous times by various artists.
Original film poster (source: Wikipedia)
The tune "Black Orpheus" is also known as "Manhã de Carnaval", composed by Luiz Bonfá, and there is one more composition by Bonfá included, "Gentle Rain", which introduces the CD. A.C. Jobim is represented through five compositions - "Triste" (from the Black Orpheus film), "How Insensitive", "Once I Loved", "Desafinado" and "This Happy Madness" - the last mentioned here performed as a solo guitar piece. The remaining repertoire is represented by three compositions by choro mandolinist Jacob Bittencourt (aka Jacob do Bandolim) - "Assanhado", "Bole-Bole" and "Doce de Coco" - and two compositions by Jacob Fischer, "Little Teardrop" and "Sonho Carioca", both also recorded at the Django tribute CD from 2011 and reflecting Fischer's adoption of Brazilian choro. The trio again delivers a great musical output, the support of the rhythm section is excellent and Fischer's guitarplaying marvels throughout, his approach to this repertoire pays its due to other guitarists like Charlie Byrd and Gene Bertoncini a.o. as well as modern jazz influence, however, arrangements and interpretation are his own.

The music on the two mentioned CDs is a splendid example of the span of Jacob Fischer's musical universe and his capacity as a musician and guitarist, here exposed in a trio setting that shows off the best both in solo playing and support. Highly recommended!

Bill Evans: Twee unieke liveconcerten

Hans Koert

Onlangs verschenen twee dubbel cd’s met concerten van pianist Bill Evans:  Live at Art D’ Lugoff’s Top of the Gate (New York City) (23 oktober 1968) en Momentum ( Stadsschouwburg - Groningen (4 februari 1972).

Bill Evans: Two unique live concerts (English) | Bill Evans: Twee unieke liveconcerten (Nederlands)

Bill Evans ( 1929-1980)

Bill Evans, geboren in Plainfield (NJ) augustus 1929, overleed bijna 32 jaar geleden ( september 1980). An enormously influential figure …… omschrijft Brian Priestley  hem in the Rough Guide to Jazz  - his music was always extreme creative, floating without the limitations of the 4/4 meter .. freed from the lockstep 4/4 that had come to exercise in tyranny over jazz …. . Bill Evans, schrijft Nat Hentoff,  would sometimes get so involved in the piano that he would lean over and lean over and you’d think he was about to be swallowed by the piano.  He played with his head bent to the inventions. Bill Evans verzwolgen door zijn instrument.

Bill Evans - Live at Art D' Lugoff's Top of the Gate ( Resonance Records HCD-2012)

The Top of the Gate (New York City) (foto: D' Lugoff family )(origineel in kleur)

You could find musicians stopping by, film- and TV celebrities and also tourists, who wanted to sample the Greenwich Village scene. Maar het is zoals slagwerker Marty Morell verzucht:  ….Sadly, those days will never be back …

Bill Evans - Momentum ( Limetree MCD 043)

Nu, na veertig jaar worden ze voor het eerst uitgebracht op een dubbel cd, die de titel Momentum kreeg; een suggestie van Bill’s weduwe  Nenette Evans: At the time of this recording in 1972, Bill was experiencing a momentous upswing in his personal life, his health, and his career, herinnert ze zich ….  so I would like to give the album the appropriate title of Momentum.

Bill Evans: Two Unique Live Concerts

Bill Evans:  An enormously influential figure (Quote: Brian Priestley)
Live at the Art d' Lugoff's Top of the Gate (NYC) (1968)  Live at the Stadsschouwburg - Groningen (The Netherlands) ( 1972)
Hans Koert

Recently two live concerts by pianist Bill Evans have been released on two 2cd albums: Bill Evans  Live at Art D’ Lugoff’s Top of the Gate ( New York City)( 23rd of October, 1968) and Bill Evans – Momentum ( Stadsschouwburg - Groningen (The Netherlands) ( 4th of February, 1972. ).

Bill Evans: Two unique live concerts (English) | Bill Evans: Twee unieke liveconcerten (Nederlands)

Two live concerts, registrations from 1968 and 1972, by the Bill Evans Trio: featuring Bill Evans at the piano, Eddie Gomez on bass and Marty Morell on drums, learn that Bill Evans is still widely popular among jazz fans.

Bill Evans ( 1929-1980)

Bill Evans, born in Plainfield (NJ) August 1929 passed away almost 32 years ago ( September 1980). An enormously influential figure …… Brian Priestley labels him in the Rough Guide to Jazz  - his music was always extreme creative, floating without the limitations of the 4/4 meter .. freed from the lockstep 4/4, that had come to exercise in tyranny over jazz …. . His characteristic posture sitting behind the keyboard, lean over to his hands at the keyboard …. Bill Evans, Nat Hentoff put it, would sometimes get so involved in the piano that he would lean over and lean over and you’d think he was about to be swallowed by the piano.  He played with his head bent to the inventions.

Bill Evans - Live at Art D' Lugoff's Top of the Gate ( Resonance Records HCD-2012)

Bill Evans recordings are still extreme popular – even 32 years after he passed away, a lot of jazz fans listen to his music. Numerous live recordings have been released since he passed away – most boot legs, often taped on a home recorder from the back of a club, recorded  in an inferior quality …….. , but these two concerts were both taped professional ………….. in an excellent sound quality.

The Top of the Gate (New York City) (photo courtesy: D' Lugoff family )(original colour picture)

The concert at the Top of the Gate was recorded by George Klabin, then a 22 year old student at Columbia University, with the permission of Bill’s manager Helen Keane.  The taped concert was broadcasted just once for a Columbia University WKCR-FM radio show.
The Top of the Gate was part of the Village Gate club in New York CityIt was a large room where audiences dined and drank, Eddie Gomez, the bass player in the trio remembers: It attracted a much different sort of listeners (then the Village Gate). You could find musicians stopping by, film- and TV celebrities and also tourists, who wanted to sample the Greenwich Village scene. When Bill played at the Top of the Gate, in the Village Gate both Thelonious Monk and the Charles Lloyd Quartet were performing on a double-bill. Isn’t it great to realize all those icons play under the same roof?  But it is like Marty Morell, the drummer, recalls …. Sadly, those days will never be back …

Bill Evans - Momentum ( Limetree MCD 043)

The Groningen concert was taped by Jan Warntjens, a Dutch pianist and Evans aficionado, Rob Rijneke says in the liner notes, and also Jan was allowed to tape the concert professionally.
It was transferred from tape to cd and preserved … now after nearly forty years, it was released on the Bill Evans 2cd Momentum, a title suggested by Nenette Evans, Bill’s widow: At the time of this recording in 1972, Bill was experiencing a momentous upswing in his personal life, his health, and his career, she remembered: so I would like to give the album the appropriate title of Momentum.  Bill had performed twenty-one times (!) in The Netherlands, the liner notes learn. The first time in 1964  and the last time a year before he passed away.  For a lot of Dutchmen the Tros Radio Sesjun programs will be remembered, featuring Bill Evans, like in 1973 and 1975 at the Boerenhofstede in Laren (The Netherlands) and De Meerkoet in Lelystad (The Netherlands). Parts of these concerts have been released last year in a 2cd album Bill Evans The Sesjun Radio Shows.

 The Groningen Stadsschouwburg

Two concerts – two sets – a remarkable piano player with two great accompanists:  Eddie Gomez, double bass player, part of the trio for 11 years since 1966 and  Marty Morell, the up-and-coming drummer, who had just started in the trio at the Top of the Gate concert – Both albums contain almost 30 tracks ( only two are doubling: Bill’s composition Turn Out The Stars and the standard Emily). Two sets - two essentials -  for each serious jazz fan, who has missed the opportunities to hear Bill Evans play live or just love to recall this sensation .....

The Dutch Jazz Archive in Amsterdam, up to this year part of the MCN, is sorely tried, due to economy measures by the Dutch governement - It even might be closed if we don't do anything ..... On the pretext of "Keep the Dutch Jazz History Alive", the Dutch Jazz Archive won't let it happen and asks Jazz fans to become a Friend of the  Dutch Jazz Archive. The Keep (it) Swinging blog supports this initiative! ....

Most of Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Chet Baker and Bill Evans early recordings have been reissued in cheap budget boxes, a grab bag for collectors, but stabbed the serious record companies to the heart ...... Limetree and Resonance recently released two excellent live albums by the Bill Evans Trio, recorded in the Top of the Gate in New York City (1968) and the Stadsschouwburg in Groningen ( The Netherlands) - both in an excellent sound quality. Two essentials!
