Miles Davis: The Complete 1960 Amsterdam Concertgebouw Concert

One of the most talked-about Dutch concerts of Miles Davis released.
John Coltrane's Dutch debut
Hans Koert

It was, even in the 1960s, remarkable, that a Dutch radio station stick its neck out by scheduling a Jazz-week – seven days filled with jazz music – a programming featuring  live concerts with great names like the Oscar Peterson Trio, the Stan Getz Quartet and the Miles Davis Quintet at the Scheveningen het Kurhaus.

Miles Davis: Tweemaal in het Concertgebouw (1960) (Nederlands) | Miles Davis: The Complete 1960 Amsterdam Concertgebouw Concert ( English)

Even in The Netherlands such a jazz-week was a sensation.  The VARA- radio station brought a two hours live radio program with the Miles Davis Sextet (sic) (vibist Buddy Montgomery was originally part of Miles Davis JATP group) , playing at the Kurhaus in Scheveningen (  9.30 p.m. – 10.30 p.m.) and the Oscar Peterson Trio ( live from the Concertgebouw). ( 0.00 – 1.00 a.m.). It was a pity, according Anton Kop from the Dutch Rhythme magazine, that Peterson’s concert did overrun its time, so there was no time enough to broadcast Stan Getz concert on Dutch radio. The Miles Davis Quintet was scheduled as last comer.

 Anouncement in Rhythme (1960)

Both the Miles Davis Kurhaus as the Concertgebouw concert are now available on cd. A few years ago the Miles Davis Quintet – Live in Den Haag recordings were reissued by Lonehilljazz (LHJ10206) – finally also the 1960 Amsterdam recordings by the Miles Davis Quintet have been issued by the Dutch Jazz Archive in its award-winning series Jazz at the Concertgebouw: Miles Davis - So What  ( NJA 1301) (2cd)

Article announcing the concerts (source Vrije volk ( 9th of April 1960))

The concerts were part of a JATP tour organized by Norman Granz. Miles Davis Quintet, featuring Miles Davis on trumpet, John Coltrane on tenor saxophone, Wynton Kelly at the piano, Paul Chambers bass and Jimmy Cobb drums,  had performed in Zurich the day before the Dutch concerts were scheduled. It had missed the airplane that should bring the musicians in time in Scheveningen. It had a three hours delay. Ruud Jacobs, Dutch bass player, told me that Paul Chambers instrument had been damaged during the flight and needed a replacement ...... He used Ruud's bass during both concerts. They played one set at the Kurhaus, which was broadcasted live by Vara-radio. The audience had delighted with this Miles Davis concert, organized by Dutch impresario Lou Van Rees, the third appearance of Miles in our country, but were shocked by the sound of John Coltrane.

 Miles Davis - So What (2cd) ( NJA 1301)

The critics were very harsh in their judgements:  Het plezier  ……werd volledig vergald door John Coltrane, de man die de tenorsax vasthield (!)  ( = John Coltrane, the man with the tenor sax in his hands (!) spoiled  the audience’s pleasure) …. ergerlijke melodische armoede (John Coltrane) ( = Annoying melodic poverty) – De verschrikkingen die de figuur Coltrane produceerde. ( = The terror produced by the man named Coltrane).

( = It’s a sad fact that the VARA's-radio Jazz week final chord, was out of tune! ). Some hours later, in Amsterdam, Miles was scheduled again, at the Concertgebouw night concert ….. The audience must have heard the Kurhaus concert and had heard Coltrane playing…. Sommige Amsterdamse nachtbrakers wisten vooruit, welke orgie hen te wachten stond ( = Some Amsterdam night-revellers knew, what orgy they could expect). Although Coltrane hold in, it seems that a lot jazz fans left the concert during the Miles Davis performance at the Concertgebouw ….

Vara's Jazzweek with the Miles Davis concert as one of its highlights, but the critics wereafter the concert as hard as nails. (Source: Friese Courier (9th of April 1960))

It is hard to believe, when you listen to the music with 2013 ears, that the critics panned this concert - Now we know that Miles Davis played one of his  best concerts of that year .....

The 2cd album Jazz at the Concertgebouw: Miles Davis - So What  ( NJA 1301)  also features the October 1960 concert by the Miles Davis Quintet at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw.
Sonny Stitt (Kurhaus)
 (foto Pieter Mazel)
John Coltrane had left the group and Miles had found a replacement: alto saxophone player Sonny Stitt. When Coltrane left, Jimmy Heath, who just had left prison (due to drug abuse),  took his place, but had to stay within a sixty-mile radius of Philadelphia, so couldn’t join Miles Davis group on tours … Wayne Shorter, who could be a candidate, played in Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers ….. Finally Sonny Stitt joined the quintet. The tour started in England (London, Manchester(Free Trade Hall)), Paris (Olympia), the Koncerthuset in Stockholm and on the 15th,  like in April, a concert at the Kurhaus in The Hague and a night concert  at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. This concert appealed to the jazz critics and the audience enjoyed Miles Davis, who was labeled by Paul ten Have as één der grootsten uit de jazz (= One of the greatest in jazz ….) – the only minor point was Sonny Stitt’s conservative, rather predictable playing … ( = a highlight, hard to exceed). This concert has been released now too at this great Miles Davis – So What 2cd album …….

 The tracklist

The Jazz at the Concertgebouw series contains more remarkable concerts live from the famous Amsterdam music theatre, like concerts with  Chet Baker (1955) – Gerry Mulligan (1956) – J.J. Johnson (1957) – Sarah Vaughan (1958) – Misha Mengelberg-Piet Noordijk Quartet (1966) and Jazz from Carnegie Hall featuring Lee Konitz, Zoot Soms, Phineas Newborn, Red Garland, Oscar Pettiford and Kenny Clarke (1958)

When critics are quoted about your concert as ... ergerlijke melodische armoede  (annoying melodic poverty) – Het plezier werd volledig vergald ( they spoiled the listeners pleasure), I guess you better decide to stop your career in music ....  But not for John Coltrane. His debut in The Netherlands didn't pass by unnoticed. The Dutch Jazz archive released in its award-winning series Jazz at the Concergebouw two talked-about 1960 concerts by the Miles Davis Quintet.

Metropolis - A Fantasy in Blue

Metropolis - a Ferde Grofé experiment in modern music celebrates its  85th birthday
A Tribute
Hans Koert

On the 12th of March 1928, eighty-five years ago, the enlarged 26 men Paul Whiteman Orchestra, his so-called Concert Orchestra, recorded the first and second part of Metropolis, a suite in four parts, that had a total playing time of ca. 17 minutes. The 3rd part was recorded a day later and the fourth part was played on the 17th of March. This lenghtly tune was released on two 30cm 78rpm gramophones for Victor.

  • This is a re-post of a previous blog entitled Metropolis, posted due to its 80th (!) birthday - five years ago!
Ferde Grofé (1937)

The tune, which got the work title Fantasia in E-flat, was composed by Ferde Grofé and later got its final name Metropolis - a Fantay in Blue, named after the succesfull 1926 film Metropolis by Fritz Lang. Mind that Ferde's tune has nothing to do with the film - it only gives you an impression of the sounds and noises of a big city, a so-called Metropolis.

Paul Whiteman and his Orchestra (1928)

Ferde Grofé was born in New York City March 1892 as Ferdinand Rudolph von Grofé. His ancestors came from Germany. Both his parents played classical music and when his father passed away he returned to Germany with his mother where he got violin and piano lessons. Some years later they returned to New York and when he left school he found a job as a musician. After some gigs at bars and bordellos, he started to perform in the Los Angeles Symphony Orchestra. In 1915 he played in the band of Art Hickman where he wrote arrangements for dance orchestra. In the late 1910s he became interested in jazz and one of his collegues in the Los Angeles Symphony Orchestra, Paul Whiteman, became fascinated by Ferde's arrangements. In 1920 when Paul Whiteman needed a new piano player in his band he asked Ferde and so they  cooperated, which was a start to some great recordings of Ferde Grofé compositions, like the Mississippi Suite and the Grand Canyon Suite and, of course, this Metropolis.

Metropolis by the Willem Breuker Kollektief (BVHaast CD 8903)

I have some two great contemporary recordings from this suite. Mind that this Metropolis suite was performed in public only once on  stage at Carnegie Hall in October 1928 and since that time no orchestra ever played this piece complete in public again until January 1989 when the Dutch Willem Breuker Kollektief played it for their BVHaast CD Metropolis (CD 8903). Enjoy a fragment of the first part of Metropolis, as played by the Willem Breuker Kollektief

For me it was the first time that I heard it on record and I was impressed by this Experiment in Modern Music, as this piece was subtitled. Both Ferde Grofé as Paul Whiteman wanted to make Modern American Music, that should be of an equal quality as the great European classical composers. If you have seen Paul Witeman's film The King of Jazz you can imagine how it sounded.

The Modern American Music of Ferde Grofé - The Beau Hunks ( Basta 30-9083)

Fifteen years ago the Beau Hunks, the orchestra known for its Laurel & Hardy music, played it using the original arrangements and this performance is to be found at their album The Modern American Music of Ferde Grofé. You will find more compositions of Ferde Grofé on its album like his Broadway at Night (1924), Mississippi Suite (1925) and the Three Shades of Blue (1926). This music isn't jazz nor dance music - It's symphonic music, more in the tradition of European classical music then in jazz. This week is a great opportunity to tribute this great Metropolis Suite and to let it sound ..... complete!

  • Love to share with you a fragment of  the version of this 85 years old American suite Metropolis  as played by the Dutch Beau Hunk Orchestra, directed by Jan Stulen. ( October 1997)

And for those die-hards who also love to here the "originals", as played by Paul Whiteman in 1928, you can find both parts here at You Tube:   part one - part two.

Ferde Grofé is one of those great American composers from the 20th Century, now almost forgotten, that should be spotlighted.  His Metropolis - a Fantasy in Blue is one of those great compositions that should be played more often ..... Originally performed by the Paul Whiteman Concert Orchestra at Carnegie Hall (1928) this composition is honoured today due to its 85th birthday ......

Oscar Alemán in Rio de Janeiro:1927

 Oscar Alemán earliest career recollected
His 1927 Rio de Janeiro concerts
Jørgen Larsen

Oscar Aleman, the Argentine guitarist, who impressed the European jazz scene as part of Josephine Baker's Baker Boys, but also as a member of the Parisian jazzscene, has been spotlighted recently by the biography: Tribute to Oscar Aleman. But the years Oscar played in Brazil with Les Loups were underexposed .... Thanks to Jorge Carvalho de Mello we now know more about his earliest career in Brazil. In a previous blog I told you about the year 1926, today more about 1927, the year in which Oscar and Gaston returened to Buenos Aires and made their first records.

Oscar Alemán in Brazilië: Les Loups (1926) (Nederlands) - Oscar Alemán in Brazil: Les Loups (1926) (Engels) - Oscar Alemán in Brazilië: Les Loups (1927) (Nederlands) - Oscar Alemán in Brazil: Les Loups (1927) (English) - Oscar in Rio de Janeiro (1926-1927) ( English)

In a previous blog I told you about the year 1926, today more about 1927, the year in which Oscar and Gaston returned to Buenos Aires, after concerts in Rio de Janeiro and debuted on records.

Rio de Janeiro -1920s (Collection Marcelo Almirante)

The year 1927 was a special year in Brazilian popular music; a sponsored national contest among Rio de Janeiro guitarists was mobilizing the public through intense propaganda, new names were taking the stage and already established musicians were challenged. In this intense atmosphere Les Loups duo continued to perform in movie theaters of Rio. The duo is presented on the 25th of January together with Companhia Juvenal Fontes. February and March of 1927 have no trace of Les Loups, but in April the duo is back, now presented at Cine Teatro Glória on the 18 th and 19th of April. The critics heaped praise on the duo's presentations according to de Mello's source, which quote (my English translation from the Portuguese): the duo " sparked endless applause from the audience, the songs performed on acoustic guitar [were] so really masterful for two rare performers". - The success with the Carioca public continued during the Portuguese week at Cine Odeon. The 24th of April Les Loups is present on stage, again with other artists, at this occasion performing Portuguese fado music gaining applause from the audience and praise from the critics, stating: (quote my English translation) "Les Loups, these extraordinary guitarists who are working with the Company Tangara, played several fados, charming".

Cine Odeon - Rio de Janeiro ( 1920s)
In July, a show was arranged as a tribute to the accomplishment of Brazilian aviation after the first plane had crossed the Atlantic Ocean. The show was presented on the 8th of July with the participation of various artists, among them were Les Loups. The ex-president of the Repulic attended the show that included a spectacle or play, which had gained success already during a theater performance the 21st of June, which also including Les Loups accompanying some of the participating actors/artists.

Rio Branco - Rio de Janeiro (1920s)

In August, the duo returned to the Cine Theatro Central from the 2nd of August and stayed there throughout the month, again appearing with success on stage alongside other artists including acrobats, dancers and tap dancers.

On August 15th, Les Loups is taking part in another major event in Rio, where many artists were mobilized to produce a great spectacle whose income was allocated for the purchase of a bust of the impresario J.Stampa. Les Loups participated alongside several famous Brazilian popular guitarists of the time. - The last mentioning of Les Loups in 1927 was found in a notice announcing a party on September 29th, where the duo participated as part of the arranged performance.

Hawayanita - Les Loups debut (Recorded ca. 10th of December 1927)

Back in Buenos Aires they debuted on a 78rpm. recording for Victor records, a tango entitled Hawayanita and a walz Criolitta, as Les Loups - Dúo de Guitarras Hawaianas - the start of a productive period as a duo, with ten records in one and a half year - all for Victor.

But few information is available from the period that Oscar Alemán started his musical career as part of Les Loups,  Dúo de Guitarras Hawaianas. Thanks to Jorge Carvalho de Mello we now know more about his 1926 and 1927 years in Brazil, where he performed, before the duo left for Europe.

Denise Jannah en Dim Kesber in Porgy en Bess

Dim Kesber: Amazing Grace 68 years in business (Denise Jannah)

Dim Kesber ( foto: Hans Koert)

Dim Kesber ( foto: Hans Koert)

(Dr. Jazz DJM 211).
Apex Blues -
Dutch Swing College Band
(Juli 1953) (coll. Hans Koert)
Friends.

Dim Kesber ( foto: Hans Koert)

De eerste set werd geopend met de Duke Ellington klassieker It Don’t Mean a Thing ( If It Ain’t Got That Swing) waarbij Dim op tenorssax meteen liet horen waar het dit concert om zou draaien …. Swing
Dim Kesber
(foto: Hans Koert)

Denise Jannah (foto: Hans Koert)

  Denise Jannah (foto: Hans Koert)

Noah Nicoll (foto: Hans Koert)

Rob Agerbeek ( foto: Hans Koert)

Rob Agerbeek (l) met
Don Byas en
Rob Langereis

(Nautica club -

Wolf Martini ( foto: Hans Koert)

I’m Beginning to See The Light.
Rob Agerbeek (foto: Hans Koert)

Miles Davis: Tweemaal in het Concertgebouw (1960) (Nederlands) | Miles Davis: The Complete 1960 Amsterdam Concerts ( English)

 Advertentie in Rhythme (1960)

 Miles Davis - So What (2cd) ( NJA 1301)

Sonny Stitt (Kurhaus)

I found out that he doesn’t talk much and rarely disuss his Music. He’s completely unpredictable; sometimes he’d walk off stage after just playing a few notes, not even completing one chorus. If I asked him something about his music, I never knew how he was going to take it (citaat John Coltrane) en er moest dus vervanging gevonden worden.
Jimmy Heath (2012)
