Virginia Mayhew honors Mary Lou Williams and Duke Ellington

Two Women in jazz - Mary Lou Williams and Virginia Mayhew
The Duke Ellington Legacy: Single Petal of a Rose
Hans Koert

Recently two noticeable albums have been released: Mary Lou Williams - The Next 100 Years and Single Petal of a Rose by the Duke Ellington Legacy. Both albums have been recorded  by bands directed by the US tenor saxophone player Virginia Mayhew.
Mary Lou Williams - The Next 100 Years: Virginia Mayhew Quartet with special guest Wycliffe Gordon (Renma Recordings 6402cd) (design: Deb Lake)

At first sight the title of the album: MARY LOU WILLIAMS - THE NEXT 100 YEARS ( in Capitals) I have in hands, seems to be a reissue of recordings by the late Mary Lou Williams, due to the fact that she was born 100 years ago. A great black and white promo photo is framed at the cover. The second part of the title - The Next 100 Years takes the edge of it ....... and seems to be an impracticability, as Mary Lou Williams passed away more then 20 years ago. But let's take a closer look at the front cover which also reads the name of the Virginia Mayhew Quartet (With Special Guest Wycliffe Gordon).  This explains what we have in hands - an album by the Virginia Mayhew Quartet dedicated to the great piano player and composer: Mary Lou Williams ........

The Mary Lou Williams project: The Next 100 Years, was born in late 2009, Virginia Mayhew explains.
I was invited to play at the Women In Jazz festival, a festival in Washington dedicated to great women in jazz and we were brainstorming on what theme would fit best ...  Tony realized at some point, that Mary Lou Williams would have celebrated her centennial in May 2010 if she still should have been around .... Virginia and Tony got all support from Father Peter O' Brien, executor of the Mary Lou Williams estate, and they were allowed to research Mary Lou Williams original handwritten charts and arrangements ............ And to cut a long story short, the musical heritage was such a rich subject, that it would have been a shame to limit it to only one concert during the festival ......... In December 2010 the music of Mary Lou Williams was recorded and released in the US, spring 2011.  Now this album is international available: “Mary Lou Williams - The Next 100 Years".

Virginia Mayhew (photo courtesy: George Kopp)

The Virginia Mayhew Quartet features Virgina Mayhew on tenor saxophone, Ed Cherry blues-tinged Dizzy-alum, as he is labeled, on the guitar, Harvie S on double bass and Andy Watson on drums. Special guest on this album is trombonist Wycliffe Gordon. Virginia is active in the New York jazz scene since 1987 and played with legends like the now almost forgotten Earl Fatha Hines, Cab Calloway, Frank Zappa and veteran trombonist Al Grey to list some who "left town" and some great contemporary jazz players like pianists  Toshiko Akiyoshi, Chico O' Farrill and Claudio Roditi, the Brazilian trumpet player, whose sound fascinates me .....
For the Mary Lou Williams - The Next 100 Years project, Virigina selected ten tracks - eight tracks from the Mary Lou Williams musical legacy, like her 1946 recording Waltz Boogie, which was one of the first songs ever recorded in a non-duple meters and the great tune, What's Your Story Morning Glory, originally composed when she was part of the Andy Kirk Orchestra, but best remembered in a version at one of her last recordings, three years before she passed away, at the 1978 Montreux Jazz Festival. Virginia honors her in two own compositions, like For Mary Lou and 5 for Mary Lou, an outgrowth from Waltz Boogie in 5/4.

Enjoy a few fragment of some tunes played for the Mary Lou Williams project presented on the album as part of a live show at Rosy O Grady's:

The second album that was released by Renma Recordings is Single Petal of a Rose, by the Duke Ellington Legacy.

Single Petal of a Rose - Duke Ellington Legacy with special guest Houston Person ( Renma Recordings 6403CD) ( Painting by Gaye Ellington, granddaughter of the Duke)

It's is great to learn how Virginia Mayhew regards the music as played by the great icons in jazz. She's the musical director of the Duke Ellington Legacy, a 9-piece band led by guitarist Edward Kennedy Ellington II, the grandson of the great bandleader.

Edward Kennedy Ellinngton II (photo courtesy: George Kopp)
He travelled with Duke and was the road manager of his father's band, the Mercer Ellington Orchestra, in fact Duke's band when he passed away in 1974. The Duke Ellington Legacy group wants to keep the musical legacy of the Duke alive and both Norman Simmons, who plays the piano and Virginia Mayhew made the arrangements ....  The title tune of the album, Single Petal of a Rose was originally recorded in 1958 by Duke Ellington and Jimmy Woode and was handed to the British Queen Elizabeth - Just one copy of this record exists ......

The Duke Ellington Legacy: f.l.t.r.: Jami Daubner - Paul Wells - Noah Bless - Tom DiCarlo - Norman Simmons - Edward Kennedy Ellington II - Nanvy Reed - Virginia Mayhew  (photo courtesy: Walter Karling)

Simmons opens the album at the piano (Where's the bass player?) with that composition, originally dedicated to Duke's mother Evelyn. The album contains a dozen recordings originally known by the Duke Ellington orchestra, but also some composed by Norman Simmons, like Home Grown.  It's hard to point to the tracks that fascinated me most.  Maybe the solemn version of Blood Count with Noah Bless on trombone; or that Latin version of Johnny Come Lately featuring Paul Wells on drums and Sheila Earley on congas? I really liked to listen to the well known Ellington standards like Happy Go Luck Local, In My solitude, In A Mellow Tone or Lush Life, with guest player Houston Person - a few of the numerous standards that belong to the Duke Ellington repertoire.

Isn't it great that Virginia Mayhew, fascinated by the jazz legacy of the XXth century, creates such great albums, honoring the legends of the past. Both albums should be in your cd-player. Find a copy at the her site of the one by Remma Recordings .....

Recently Virginia Mayhew released two albums, both dedicated to two icons in jazz: Mary Lou Williams and Duke Ellington. A few years ago Virginia Mayhew and her Quartet ( + Wycliffe Gordon as special guest) honored the great composter and piano player Mary Lou Williams who should have celebrated het centenial: The Next 100 Years, part of the title of the album, suggests that her music should be played for ever .... Virginia Mayhew is also the musical director of the Duke Ellington Legacy band, led by Duke's grandson. A tribute of Duke's music entitled: Single Petal of a Rose, you shouldn't miss.

Oscar Alemán's bezoek aan Spanje 1959 - deel 1

OSCAR ALEMÁN en zijn vergeten Europese tournee (1959)
La famosa Orquesta Argentina de Exhibición Oscar Alemán
Hans Koert

Oscar Alemán in Europe 1959 - part one (English) | Oscar Alemán in Europe 1959 - part two (English) | Oscar Alemán bezoekt Europa 1959: deel 1 (Nederlands) | Oscar Alemán bezoekt Europa 1959: deel 2 (Nederlands)

Sumi Tonooka - Now

Live registration of a concert at the Howland Centre (Beacon - NY) (March 2010)
An existential leap onto a lonely stage with nowhere to hide.
 Hans Koert

The US born pianist and composer Sumi Tonooka is rather unknown in this part of the world. Born in Philadelphia, October 1956, she moved to Boston at her 15th, where she got piano lessons from Margaret Chaloff ( mother of guitar player Serge Chaloff) and Charlie Banacos, pianist, composer and educator, who was one of the leading pianists in jazz education .... Moved to Detroit she made her debut on record with trumpet player Marcus Belgrave, who can be heard on Mingus famous Changes One and Two recordings (December 1974).

 Sumi Tonooka ( Source: sumitonooka.com)

Sumi founded, aged 17 years old, her own trio with Tyrone Brown and Newman Baker and started to compose. During this period she came into contact with drummer Philly Joe Jones, who advised her .... He heard me with my trio and liked this song I had composed, Tonooka remembers: I was really green and he was good in a lot of ways, in terms of being generous with his musical expertise and getting me thinking more about rhythm.

Sumi Tonooka - Now (ARC 2369) ( cover design: Paul Tang)

Before she moved to New York City, she was able to play with great names like Sonny Fortune and Robin and Kevin Eubanks. She made her first own album August 1984 with Rufus Reid, a personel friend and colleague of over twenty-five years, and Akira Tana, on which her composition Phantom Carousel could be found, the track that opens the second set of her Beacon Center concert with own compositions.

Sumi Tonooka's latest album Now, a 2cd record, is a registration of a solo recital at the Howland Center in Beacon (NY), the 27th of March, 2010. Playing a solo concert is the ultimate test for a musician's resourcefulness. The idea was to document the performance, sort of one evening in the life of an artist. The first set contains all standards, played in a way only Tonooka can. She takes compositions by Duke Ellington ( Heaven), Cole Porter ( All of You) and Thelonious Monk (Evidence) to task.

She heard Monk playing at a concert at the Aqua Lounge; a present gived by her parents for her 13th birthday and his music fascinated her:  .. and it was then and there .. that's why I decided to be a jazz musician. Her version of Evidence is really great in my opinion. She was also inspired by veteran piano player Mary Lou Williams, who was her teacher while in New York City for a short period. I studied with her at her home in Harlem and saw her perform a number of times.  The depth of her spirit and musicianship was profound to me. Sumi Tonooka honors her with a medley, which features Mary Lou Williams tunes, she loved to play, like Baby Man, Waltz Boogie and Dirge Blues.
The second set was reserved for her own compositions, like her before mentioned Phantom Carousel. Her compositions are inspired by her African roots ( she has an African-American father and a Japanese-American mother) in compositions like Sojourn 1 and Uganda Blues, which was inspired by a tour along several West African countries with a quintet featuring violinist John Blake. Her composition Moroccan Daze, first recorded in 2004 with her trio ( Rufus Reid - Bob Braye) for the album Long Ago Today, remembers her meeting with Joachim Lartey, an expert in African drumming.

Detail of the cover (photo courtesy Paul Tsang)

Isn't it great that she finished the second set, the concert and her album with some stride music, honoring the legendary piano player Eubie Blake, who was active even in his old age and was, for years, the only surviving active symbol of the early days of jazz ......

You can order this great 2cd album at her website.

The making of .... Leola Felton onthult haar geheimen

Beeld rond mysterieuze Durium pianiste krijgt vorm.
Names & Numbers publiceert artikel van Robert Ford en Howard Rye.
Hans Koert

The making of .... Leola Felton reveals her secrets ( English) | The making of ... Leola Felton onthult haar geheimen ( Nederlands) | The making of .... Leola Felton and Connie's Inn ( English) | The making of ...

New York City: This record brings ...... Leola Felton from Connie's Inn ...... .

Connie's Inn ( foto: nycago.org)

Ze werd geboren als Leola M. Felton in New Jersey, waarschijnlijk in de plaats Madison, rond 1901 en ze overleed 63 jaar oud in New York City als Leola H.F. Carter.

(Schirmer Books - New York (1977)

( bron: Hendersonia - Walter C. Allen)

In februari 1964, vlak voordat ze overleed, vertelde ze Harry Pilch, dat ze vroeger ..... had worked on arrangements for many entertainers including Fats Waller and Fletcher Henderson. ( zie Hendersonia - Walter C. Allen - p. 499). Feit is dat zowel Fletcher Henderson als Fats Waller begin jaren dertig speelden in ..... The Connie's Inn. They played tangos, waltzes, fox-trots, college songs, current hits, excerpts from the classics in dance temos, just about everything, herinnerde Russell Procope zich ( Hendersonia  - Walter C. Allen - p. 253).

Fletcher Henderson's Orchestra - ca. 1932. (foto: Frank Driggs Collectie)

In The New York Times valt te lezen: Fats Waller, co-writer of  My Fate Is In Your Hands and other hits, has expended his activities thru organizing a dance orchestra. He has placed his unit at Connie's Inn, replacing Fletcher Henderson's Band. ( Fats in Facts - Laurie Wright (p. 69).

Ken & Bob: Escape To Jazz Island

 Two veteran  string maestros ....
A traditional mix from the Hawaiian  up to Manhattan Island
Hans Koert

I still feel the thrill visiting the Second Belgian Ukulele festival in Sint Niklaas, Belgium, a few years ago. The music, played during that festival, on that tiny, rather funny instrument or lap steel dobro, reminded me to the music of the early 1930s, when Hawaiian sounds, played by names like Sol Hoopii, Roy Smeck and Andy Sanella were legends on their instruments.
Ken & Bob, born as Kenton (Ken) R.L.Emerson ( Ken) and Robert (Bob) Armstrong, gave me that same feeling, while listening to their latest album Escape to Jazz Island, released by GrassSkirt records.
Ken & Bob - Escape To Jazz Island ( GrassSkirt GSK 1004) ( artwork: Robert Armstrongs)

Ken Emerson was born in California more then 60 years ago and started to play at the age of seven, the music he heard from his father's music collection at his mother's ukulele. He raised in a musical family which has its musical roots in Hawaii - his mother, Alice, started her career at the 1939 World's Fair Exhibition in San Francisco playing the uke. In 1968 Ken's family moved to Hawaii, where he became fascinated, together with his brother Phil, by the Hawaiian language and musical culture and became inspired by the 78rpm records of great legends like Sol Hoopii and Sol. K. Bright sr. - he even played with the latter, who passed away in 1992. Although Ken also accompanied numerous jazz and pop musicians like Taj Mahal, Dave Mason, Elvin Bishop and Graham Nash, he still loves to play these Hawaiian sounds .....
Ken (Emerson) & Bob (Armstrong) ( photo courtesy: Till Kreuger)

Bob Armstrong was inspired by early jazz, Hawaiian and string band recordings.
He became a member of the R. Crumb Cheap Suit Serenaders and a guest player at concerts and recordings by Janet Klein and her Parlor Boys, where he can be heard as a vocalist, on the guitar, accordion, banjo or the musical saw. The great Parlor Boys, directed by ukulele girl Janet Klein are less known in this part of the world (  a shame). The Cheap Suit Serenaders however, directed by the bad boy cartoonist of the 1960s hippie culture and dedicated 78rpm record collector
R(obert) Crumb was very popular during the last decades. He moved, years ago, from the States to France. Bob has his love for collecting old 78rpm (Hawaiian) records, his work as a cartoonist and his fascination for early (jazz)music in common with Robert Crumb

Label of Ken & Bob's Escape to Jazz Island ( Art work: Robert Armstrong)

Their album Escape to Jazz Island contains more then a dozen tracks, played by Ken & Bob, some tracks enlarged by piano player and vocalist David Paquette and singer Elaine Hoffman. The album contains, besides some own compositions, like Bees in Blue Flat and Minkow Tango, a lot of traditional jazz and Hawaiian tunes, like Frank Ferera's Palakiko Blues (which was first recorded November 1922 with Anthony Francini for Gennett), Roy Smeck's late 1940s Ukulele Bounce and the well known jazz classics  BreezeSomeday Sweetheart and Japanese Sandman.
Ken (Emerson) & Bob (Armstrong) ( photo courtesy: Till Kreuger)

Personally I like tunes like Hapa Haole Hula Girl, originally recorded in 1915 for Columbia by Helen Louise and Frank Ferera or Tiger Shark as originally played by Peter, Michael, Joe and Jim Hodgkinson and their Hawaiian Islanders ( London May 1935).
Isn't it great that these two veteran string maestros, as they are labeled in the liner notes, keep this almost forgotten music alive?

The Hawaiian and Hawaiian-related music as played by legends like Sol Hoopii, Sol. K. Bright and Roy Smeck, now almost forgotten, was very popular, when the world went through a crisis 80 years ago - the depression of the 1930s. Nowadays it seems a new crisis lies in wait, so be prepared ........ Ken & Bob, Ken Emerson and Robert Armstrong, offer you a way to survive the next crisis by Escaping to Jazz Island ..... GrassSkirt released their latest album Hawaiian style Escape to Jazz Island!

Curtis Fuller - Down Home

My Band of Choice (Quote: Curtis Fuller)
He made all of us feel that we are the most important musicians on the planet. (Quote: Keith Oxman)

Recently the third album  of Curtis Fuller with the Keith Oxman Quintet has been released on the Capri label: Down Home. Previous releases were entitled: Dues in Progress (2005) and I Will Tell Her ( 2010)
Curtis Fuller ( thanks to Capri Records)

It is always great to listen to musicians who have played, years ago, with the great legendary jazz musicians from the past, like Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane, Bud Powell, Miles Davis or Lester Young. It must be a treat for musicians to have such a legend in your band .... One of those men, a legend himself, is Curtis Fuller, the trombonist, who recorded in the late 1950s with all the great names of that era like Paul Chambers, Yusef Lateef, Paul Quinichette, Wilbur Harden and Sonny Clark, the latter with the legendary John Coltrane. John invited Curtis to play the trombone in one of the most famous Blue Note albums of the 1950s Blue Train.

Curtis debuted in 1957 with his own band on the Prestige album New Trombone and became one of the founders of the great Art Pepper - Benny Golson Jazztet and he was also part of the Art Blakey Jazz Messengers during the first half of the 1960s.  I always have to play with the loudest drummers, he joked to Dutch drummer Eric Ineke  in 1991, like Art Blakey and Philly Joe Jones (source: The ultimate Sideman - Eric Ineke)(2012). The last decades he has been a sought after accompanist for years ..... Keith Oxman is one of those contemporary jazz musicians, that was fascinated by Curtis' sound and he couldn't imagine that he would ever play, side by side, with this great trombonist .... It never occurred to me that there would be a day that I not only would record with Curtis, but that we also would become close friends, he wrote in the liner notes of his latest album Down Home.
They first met in the summer of 2005 during a series of concerts at Dazzle's in Denver. They first recorded in Wheat Ridge (Co), June 2005, their debut album, entitled Dues in Progress. I have cherished the hours that we have been able to spend together, in person and by phone, as a result of our musical association. (Quote: Keith Oxman)

In May 2009 they joined again in the recording studio to make their 2nd album I Will Tell Her, a heart-felt tribute to his wife Caty, who unfortunately passed away a few weeks before the record was released. Two years later Keith Oxman and his men invited Curtis again and this meeting was recorded and recently released as Down Home. The sextet, my band of choice, as Curtis labels this group, features Curtis Fuller on trombone, Keith Oxman on tenor saxophone, Al Hood on trumpet and flugelhorn, Chip Stephens on piano, Ken Walker on bass and Todd Reid on drums.
The album features ten tracks, most Fuller originals, like the title track Down Home, which he composed and recorded late 1950s in a Gigi Gryce arrangement with his sextet, which could be labeled as a dreamed all-star group, featuring Lee Morgan, Hank Mobley, Tommy Flanagan, Paul Chambers and Elvin Jones. The two tracks Nu Groove and Sweetness were recorded in Copenhagen November 1979 in a quintet with his colleague on the bone Kai Winding. The other four tracks were composed by leader, saxophonist Keith Oxman ( Jonli Bercosta ), piano player Chip Stephens and trumpeter Al Hood
Don't ask me what track I prefer most - Ladies Night - Nu Groove or one of the others ..... All six men are excellent musicians and express their skills in all ten tracks  ..... The music on this albums suggests that it could have been recorded during the 1960s itself and it is great to learn that Curtis full tones still breathes the sound of the music played 50 years ago. Keith O'Brien of the Jazz Society of Oregon, suggested at its website, that jazzmen like Fuller prove, that jazz musicians don’t get older, they just find more great people to partner with ....  - I fully agree. Curtis Fuller is one of those jazz men who has seen it all happened. This legend on the slide trombone can be heard on numerous albums from the 1950s and 1960s and played besides great musicans like John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Benny Golson and Art Farmer, to list some. You can imagine that Keith Oxman was absolutely delighted with the fact that he could make in 2005 an album with this legend entitled Dues in Progress. Now their third album featuring Curtis Fuller in front of the band, has been released: Down Home.
