Nichto Reinhardt - Une Histoire

Virtuoos- en inventief spel .... een ontdekking

Deze zomer kwam ik via muziekvrienden in het bezit van een CD getiteld “Une Histoire” met boeiende opnamen van de getalenteerde gitarist Nitcho Reinhardt en zijn kwartet. Deze nog jeugdige muzikant is voor mij, door zijn virtuoos- en inventief spel, een ontdekking.

Hier mijn bevindingen: Nitcho kan soms rustig spelen, wat zeldzaam is bij de jongere Manouche gitaristen, maar ook razendsnel met loopjes zoals ik ze zelden heb gehoord. Hij speelt werkelijk alle noten tot in de finesse. Hij is opmerkelijk in zijn improvisaties en maakt zijn akkoordensolo’s en flageoletten helder en trefzeker. Je hoort bij hem in sommige nummers die donkerbruine akkoorden, zoals Django Reinhardt die soms maakte.
Ik heb helaas geen informatie over dit gitaartalent – de CD-hoes geeft veel te beknopte gegevens, alleen dat er op een Di Mauro gitaar van ’40 wordt gespeeld.

Ik vind Nitcho opmerkelijk en denk dat we beslist meer van hem zullen gaan horen. Ik roep Hot Club liefhebbers op deze CD echt eens te gaan beluisteren.
Luister naar een fragment,van de Limehouse Blues (niet op de cd), zoals Nitcho dit afgelopen jaar speelde tijdens het Django Festival in Samois op de stand van GuitareMuzic.

Jeff Holmes Quartet - Of One's Own

The opening tune of Jeff Holmes latest album Of One’s Own hit me  ….  The piano intro is influenced by great piano players like Thelonious Monk and Bud Powell …. The album Of One’s Own is not Jeff’s debut album in fact, but it is his first album with a small group …… a quartet, which features  Adam Kolker on tenor saxophone and bass clarinet, Jef Holmes at the piano, James Cammack on the bass and Steve Johns on drums.

Born in  1955 he raised in Lynnfield (MA) and studied at the Eastman School of Music. In 1976 he made his debut on record with its Eastman Jazz Ensemble. He played the trumpet on this record, in fact his main instrument in those days. He is a gifted composer and arranger and in 1978 he was one of the arranger of the California State University LA Jazz Ensemble. His debut on piano must have been in the mid 1980s when he played the piano in the Sonny Costanzo Big Band. Jeff is still a sought after trumpet player, but not on this album .... If you go more deeply into his musical career as a trumpet and  piano player, composer, arranger, educator  and big band leader, you wonder why his name is rather unknown in this part of the world.

  His band mates know all the tricks. Steve Johns is a drummer’s drummer, the liner notes read, groove without strain, inventiveness without forcing the issue. 

He started his career in the 1980s in bands like Jens Wendelboe New York Big Band Area  Code (212) – the former Norwegian band leader, who studied during that period at the Manhattan School of Music - now he's still appreciated for his craftmanship as instrumentalist, composer and bandleader. Last year he released a great album entitled Fresh Heat. I’m not going to list a name of musicians Steve has accompanied during the last 30 years, because it would fill this complete review – nowadays he’s active as an educator and plays in groups like Native Soul, accompaning legends like Benny Golson and Sonny Fortune as well as his own groups …..

Bass player James Cammack: An extremely sensitive player. He is an excellent sideman and his own solos demonstrate both virtuosity and musicality. Although he started at the piano and trumpet, he took the bass and started to play at the West Point Jazz Band, where non other than Ahmad Jamal heard him and asked him to become part of his band.  James Cammack is still, after 30 years, Ahmad Jamal’s regular bass player – in July 2011 he joined Ahmad Jamal at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam. These two guys make it a dreamed rhythm section for Jeff – I’m sure …….

Last but not least: Adam Kolker ... He is a multi-talented performer, composer and arranger, his biography reads.  He made his debut in the Orange Then Blue ( with John LaPorta en George Schuller) mid 1980s and recorded with Ray Barretto. His debut album under his own name was entitled Crazybird (1998) for Dutch A-Records. 

• The album, Of One’s Own, has nine tracks – five compositions by Jeff Holmes himself and four tracks from others, like John Abercrombie’s Labour Day, Richard Rodgers So Long, Far Well; Waltz #3 by Toby Holmes and Nat Simon’s Poinciana.   

 As I told you before … the first tune Macaroons, with a great opener at the piano, made me prick up my ears … This is jazz as I like best ….. There is, as one of my colleague reviewers wrote … such an undeniable chemistry here that :30 seconds in one gets the feeling  this fabulous 4tet may have been together 30 years (Brent Black from Critical Jazz). This feeling continues at all nine tracks. Personally I liked One For C.J., with Adam Kolker on bass clarinet, the former mentioned opening tune Macaroons and the final track, entitled So Long, Farewell, known from the Sound of Music …………

The title of the album, Of One’s Own, seems to be inspired by the fact that  Jeff Holmes presents himself here for the first time, not just hidden somewhere in the band playing his notes at the trumpet (not on this record) or the piano - directing and arranging its band book behind the scenes, but …… on his own …. into the spotlights ….. It would be great if this album could become a recommendation for European club owners or festival producers, to invite the Jeff Holmes Quartet to perform in this part of the world ……….. I’ll be there - on the first row.

Jeff Holmes is one of those jazz musicians that have made a career in jazz, as a trumpet player, as a pianist, educator, composer, arranger,.. you name it ... but still unknown in this part of the world.  He can be heard in several albums, but Of One's Own, a telling title, is his first one in a small setting ........  This Of One's Own, in which he plays  funny, quirky, personal jazz ( as piano player Arturo O' Farrill labels it) could become an introduction to his music in this part of the world. A great album!

Tribute to Oscar Alemán

Last month José & Estanislao Iacona  published their father’s  life’s work, dedicated to the popular Argentine guitar player of the 1940s and 1950s, Oscar Alemán.  The 
book is entitled Tributo a Oscar Alemán and is published in the Spanish, English and French language by Whitefly.

The book has six chapters which cover Alemán’s musical career, starting as a kid singing and dancing in their family folk ensemble Los Moreira, his close cooperation with Gaston Bueno Lobo ( as Les Loups and Trio Victor); his European years with the Baker Boys and his return to Argentina, early 1940s, where he started a great career in Argentina, which ended late 1950s.

 That chapter is called Del estrellato al abismo ( =  From stardom to ruin ….). In chapter 5 the period of the two final decades of Alemán’s live a spotlighted, the period in which he “emerged from the ashes”  - renarces de las cenizas, as the authors label it – it is the period, in which Guillermo Iacona, who started to write down his memories, remembers Oscar Alemán best. Chapter 6 is fully dedicated to the period in which Guillermo and Oscar Alemán became friends and Guillermo took music lessons from Oscar …… He sent me copies of his notebook in which Oscar had made annotations.  The book ends with some recollections by Jorgelina Alemán, Oscar’s granddaughter, who followed in her grandfathers footsteps.  The book has a discography and a filmography.

Guillermo José Iaconna started this tribute to Oscar Alemán only a couple of years ago, although he was always excited in his letters and e-mails to me, about the time he had lessons by the great guitar player and entertainer Oscar Alemán and Guillermo had sweet memories to the three concerts in which he participated ( like in the Santa Maria del Buen Ayre theater in Buenos Aires).

Making the book was his dream! When he started it, years ago, he informed me at set times about the process.  Alemán widow Carmen Vallejo describes Guillermo: El era música  (= He was all music). Jorgelina remembers Guillermo as ………… una persona de una gran calidad humana, quién de algún modo quedó cautivado por el artista y el ser, de una sensibilidad única, que era mi abuelo. ( = As a  wonderful human being, who was captivated by the artist and man of enormous sensibility who was my grandfather.) Guillermo passed away before he could finish the book, but due to his sons José and Estanislao the book, their father's lifework, could be published, with the kind support of the Governor of the province of Chaco where Oscar was born more than  a century ago.

The book is well designed and especially the dozens of rare photographs make the book a must-have for all Oscar Alemán fans …….  The type page is in three columns, one in the Spanish -, one in the English - and one in the French language, which makes the book easily to handle for most jazz fans all over the world ………… a book which will find its place in both Europe as in Argentina ……

I hope to refer often to this book in blogs dedicated to Oscar Alemán's career and point you to untold stories and information which has been published now. This book is an important source, due to the fact that the info is also available in English for every student or jazz fan who studies the music and career of Oscar Alemán.

Guillermo Iacona met Oscar Alemán in the 1960s and took guitar lessons. He was invited to play with Oscar three times at venues like the Santa Maria del Buen Ayre Theatre in Buenos Aires. They became close friends. Guillermo's dream was, to publish a book about his idol, and to share his recollections about this legendary Argentine guitar player and entertainer with his friends. He informed me at set times about the process. He talked to Alemáns widow Carmen Vallejo and his granddaughter Jorgelina Alemán and people who had known Oscar well. Before the book was finished Guillermo passed aweay, but his sons José and Estamislao Iacona finished their fater's life's work and published it - The book contains dozens of unpublished black and white photos - a must have for all jazz fans who love to have Oscar in their bookcase.

Het levenswerk van de onlangs overleden Guillermo Iacona gepubliceerd.

Afgelopen maand publiceerden José & Estanislao Iacona het levenswerk van hun onlangs overleden vader, gewijd aan de Argentijnse gitarist, die mateloos populair was in zijn vaderland tijdens de jaren veertig en vijftig van de vorige eeuw.  Het boek Tributo a Oscar Alemán is uitgebracht door Whitefly en de teksten zijn zowel in het Spaans, Engels en het Frans.

Het boek bevat zes hoofdstukken, die alle de muzikale carrière van Oscar Alemán belichten – vanaf de tijd dat hij als zesjarige moest dansen en zingen in de familieband Los Moreira; over zijn nauwe relatie met Gaston Bueno Lobo ( als het duo Les Loups en Trio Victor); zijn Europese jaren met o.a. de Baker Boys en zijn overhaaste vertrek terug naar Argentinië toen hier de Tweede Wereldoorlog uitbrak, waar hij met zijn muziek een grote populariteit opbouwde, die duurde tot eind jaren vijftig.

 Dat hoofdstuk is veelzeggend getiteld Del estrellato al abismo ( =  Van komeet tot gevallen ster) (Vrije vertaling). In hoofdstuk 5 worden de twee laatste decennia van zijn leven behandeld, waarbij hij Renacer de las cenizas, “uit de as herrees” …. waar de schrijvers aan toevoegen … algo que El Negro conocia a la perfección – Iets waar El Negro ruim ervaring mee had.  Guillermo Iacona, die zijn herinneringen aan Oscar Alemán opschreef, heeft Oscar die jaren goed gekend. Hoofdstuk zes gaat over die periode waarin Guillermo Oscar Alemán ontmoette en muzieklessen van hem kreeg. Ook speelde hij drie keer met Oscar, iets waar hij mateloos trots op was. Het boek eindigt met het verhaal van de carrière van Oscar’s kleindochter Jorgelina Alemán, die in de voetsporen van haar muzikale opa gestapt is …. Het boek bevat een discografie en een lijst met films waar Oscar in optrad.

Guillermo José Iaconna begon pas een paar jaar geleden aan zijn eerbetoon aan Oscar Alemán. Over die periode waarin hij bij Oscar les had en mee mocht spelen tijdens optredens in bijvoorbeeld het Santa Maria del Buen Ayre theater, graag en zeer enthousiast in zijn mailtjes vertelde.

Een boek maken over deze periode beschouwde hij als een droom en regelmatig werd ik op de hoogte gehouden over zijn gesprekken met Jorgelina Alemán, Oscar’s kleindochter en Oscar's weduwe Carmen Vallejo. Zij omschrijft Guillermo als volg: El era música  (= Hij was één en al muziek). Jorgelina herinnert Guillermo als …  una persona de una gran calidad humana, quien de algún modo quedó cautivado por el artista y el ser, de una sensibilidad única, que era mi abuelo. (  Een geweldig mens, die helemaal weg was van mijn grootvader, als mens en als artiest. )

 Guillermo overleed voor het boek af was, voordat hij zijn droom in vervulling zag gaan, maar gelukkig werkte hij op het laatst nauw samen met zijn zonen José en Estanislao, die het levenswerk van hun vader afmaakten. Het boek kon alleen gepubliceerd worden dankzij de persoonlijke steun van de gouverneur van de provincie Chaco waar Oscar meer dan een eeuw geleden geboren werd.

Het boek is een fraai exemplaar geworden – een coffee-table book haast, met tientallen zeldzame, maar mooi afgedrukte zwart-wit foto’s en alleen daarom al is dit boek de moeite waard. De bladspiegel is in drieën verdeeld, zodat op elke pagina de tekst in het Spaans, Engels en het Frans gedrukt is …….. waardoor het voor veel fans van over de hele wereld gemakkelijk toegankelijk is en zal dan ook vooral in Argentinië als Europa zijn weg vinden.

Ik hoop de komende maanden regelmatig in de Oscar Aleman blog reelmatig aandacht aan dit boek te kunnen geven ……… Tributo a Oscar Alemán …. Een must voor elke Alemán fan ……….  Het boek kan besteld worden op hun website.

Guillermo Iacona kreeg in de jaren zestig gitaarlessen van Oscar Alemán en mocht drie maal met hem optreden in het Santa Maria del Buen Ayre Theater in Buenos Aires. Ze werden goede vrienden. Guillermo's droom was, om een boek over zijn idool te maken, zijn herinneringen aan deze grote Argentijnse gitarist en entertainer te delen met anderen. Hij hield me vanaf de eerste dag per e-mail op de hoogte van de gesprekken met de weduwe van Alemán, Carmen Vallejo en zijn kleindochter Jorgelina Alemán ..... Helaas heeft Guillermo de publicatie van zijn levenswerk niet meer mee kunnen maken - dankzij zijn twee zonen José en Estamislao Iacona en de gouverneur van de provincie waar Oscar geboren werd, is dit prachtig geïllustreerde boek nu uitgebracht.

Anton Goudsmit - New Rotterdam Jazz Orchestra in Porgy en Bess

Geslaagd nieuwjaarsconcert in een vol Porgy en Bess (Terneuzen) Anton is gewoon een heel lekker wijf .... op de gitaar dan (uitspraak: Eric Vloeimans)

Wie van mening is dat de jazz op sterven na dood is, zat afgelopen weekend waarschijnlijk zondagmiddag thuis in z'n luie stoel of te dutten in Porgy en Bess (Terneuzen). Het New Rotterdam Jazz Orchestra, een orkest met vele bazen, zoals in de aankonding de structuur van het orkest samengevat werd .... en zelfs één die Baas heet, doelend op de jonge gitarist Reinier Baas, blies iedereen die daaraan nog twijfelde, wakker .....

• Op zondagmiddag 6 januari 2013 werd het traditionele nieuwjaarsconcert van Porgy en Bess opgeluisterd door The New Rotterdam Jazz Orchestra met als speciale gast gitarist Anton Goudsmit.

• Anton is gewoon een heel lekker wijf .... op de gitaar dan, beweerde Eric Vloeimans twee-en-een-half jaar geleden tegen Remco Takken, om het daarna snel te relativeren: ....  God, wat zeg ik nou, dat wordt natuurlijk de kop van het artikel. Dat het orkest geen jazzorkest is in de traditionele zin, bleek al meteen tijdens de openingsnummers, zoals Anton's 050 en Carma-tic, waarbij Cyrille Oswald op een bamboefluit de toon zette. Een schijnbaar ongeorganiseerde chaos, een doorgeven van klankpatronen en aanstekelijke funky ritmen met twaalf musici, die, blijkbaar vergeten waren, met name de blazers, een vaste plek op het podium te reserveren ..... Zelfs de aankondigingen leken ietwat ad-hoc te gebeuren ...... Met Zal ik dan nu maar wat zeggen .... probeerde Anton op een gegeven moment de leiding naar zich toe te trekken - zo gaat dat met een collectief.

Het Rotterdam Jazz Orchestra werd opgericht in 2004 en speelde big band jazz als vast huisorkest van De Doelen. Geleid door trompettist Rob van de Wouw, trombonist Louk Boudesteijn en bassist Johan Plomp werd vorig jaar het roer omgegooid. Net als zoveel big bands, monsterlijke gedrochten als het op financieën en organisatie aankomt, werd de noodzaak gevoeld om op een andere manier invulling te geven aan het orkest - geen grote statische organisatie meer, maar een collectief, dat, in wisselende samenstellingen, van elk concert een feest gaat maken .......... Anton Goudsmit, die de afgelopen weken als gast meespeelde, past daar uiteraard perfect in ...... Andre Dadi vatte Anton's energieke spel in een artikel getiteld Als het maar geinig blijft! (Jazz (voorjaar 2009)) als volgt samen: Voor het publiek levert dat naast briljante muziek een uiterst amusante podiumact op, iets wat een zeldzaamheid is binnen de nogal statische, hedendaagse jazzscene. ..... Misschien ligt daar wel de kracht van dit collectief, al was het in het begin van het optreden even zoeken naar de juiste balans (en plek op het podium, zo leek het).

De musici kregen, zoals het in een collectief behoort, allen de kans om zich te profileren met eigen composities. Rob van de Wouw, trompettist, bijvoorbeeld, die met zijn cd Tunnelvision de Jazzism Publieksprijs 2010 won, bracht het nummer Starchild in en van Anton kregen we, als afsluiting van de korte eerste set, zijn een-na-beste nummer (volgens de band) Boom-Petit, dat Anton voor het eerst in Porgy en Bess speelde in februari 2004 met het Fungimundi Trio (Eric Vloeimans - Ernst Reijserger en Anton Goudsmit)

Anton Goudsmit: geboren in Haarlem, april 1967, verhuisde op achtjarige leeftijd naar Laren waar hij gitaarles kreeg van Maarten van der Grinten. Anton Goudsmit ging naar het Amsterdams Conservatorium, waar hij in 1995 afstudeerde. Begin jaren negentig maakt hij zijn debuut bij een jonge Eric Vloeimans, waarmee hij in 1992 werd vastgelegd op de cd No Realistics.  Vanaf de oprichting in 1994 is hij lid van the New Cool Collective. Deze laatste band maakte veel indruk tijdens een concerttour, een paar jaar geleden, met Jules Deelder. In 1995 formeert hij zijn eerste eigen kwartet (met o.a. Yuri Honing), dat gevolgd werd door Drumless Dog, Goudsmit, Trujillo, Vierdag & Vink (waarmee hij in juni 2007 optrad tijdens het Scheldejazz)  dat uiteindelijk omgedoopt werd tot de succesvolle Ploctones.

Van alle prijzen, die Anton in de loop der tijd mocht ontvangen, is de Boy Edgar Prijs in 2010 de meest prestigieuze.

Anton Goudsmit, gekscherend wel eens met een stuiterbal vergeleken, publiektrekker bij uitstek vanwege zijn aanstekelijke energieke spel, hield zich tijdens het concert relatief rustig ..... waarschijnlijk door de beperkte ruimte op het podium.

De tweede set werd geopend met een nummer, waarvoor Juliane Gralle van haar kruk en uit haar hoek mocht komen om met haar tuba te soleren. Juliane, die behalve tuba ook bastrombone, marimba en trompet speelt, was samen met baritonsaxofoniste (en ook actief op de basklarinet) Tini Thomsen, verantwoordelijk voor een stevige bas - een basis, dat door de klankkleur van tuba en baritonsax / basklarinet voor mij een wezenlijke toevoeging in het orkest was.

Ook Tini, ten onrechte weggestopt achter een muur van collega's, soleerde tweemaal op bariton ... Ze hadden niets anders ... vertrouwde Anton me gekscherend toe, toen ze samen in de pauze het podium verlieten: We moesten het er maar mee doen, refereerde hij aan de jeugdige verschijning ....

Zo kregen alle musici gelegenheid zich te presenteren - Trombonist Louk Boudesteijn, leider van de band Fullduplexx, gooide er een luchtig walsje tegenaan, evenals Miguel Boelens en Bart Wirtz die op saxen indruk maakten met hun eigen werk.

De ritmesectie, bassist Johan Plomp, slagwerker Mark Schilders en in mindere mate Reinier Baas, de jonge veelbelovende gitarist, die volgend jaar zichzelf als Young Vips samen met Morris Kliphuis, de hoornspeler, in een serie dubbelconcerten mag presenteren, zorgden voor een stevige groovy beat, die tot bewegen uitnodigde.

De kracht van dit collectief, dat me bij tijd en wijlen deed denken (op het gevaar af appels met peren te vergelijken) aan groepen als The New Cool Collective, The Liberation Orchestra of de Flat Earth Society, ( dat begin februari naar Porgy en Bess komt) ligt dan wellicht ook in de ongedwongenheid en het plezier, dat de afzonderlijke leden hebben in het spelen in dit orkest .....  een dozijn enthousiaste musici, die samen muziek maken .... met minimale afspraken en veel vrijheid .... soms de diepte in, maar ook pretentieloos inspelen op het publiek met funky ritmen en pakkende thema’s ... een feestje voor musici en publiek ......

En terwijl het collectief zich na afloop terugtrok, na een toegift uiteraard, zong het publiek nog enige tijd in koor het thema van het laatste nummer, dat in het volle Porgy en Bess was blijven hangen ..... ten teken dat het nog niet over mocht zijn ..... Leuk toch, dat het publiek bleef doorzingen ..... vertelde Anton me na afloop ... dat zal ik niet snel vergeten.

Anton Goudsmit en het New Rotterdam Jazz Orchestra mochten het nieuwe jaar in Porgy en Bess (Terneuzen)openen en dat deden ze met verve. Anton Goudsmit, in 2010 winnaar van de Boy Edgarprijs, had veel jazzliefhebbers naar Porgy en Bess gelokt en samen met het publiek en de muzikanten bouwden ze een feestje ........ Een mooie opstart voor nog veel meer moois in Porgy en Bess ........

Fred Hersch Trio - Alive at the Vanguard

Fred Hersch latest album, Alive at the Vanguard is played by one of his best trios  ……  if not his best trio up to now.  This may be my best trio playing on record, in terms of range, sound, being in the moment, and the way we play together, Hersch said.   The trio, featuring Fred Hersch at the piano, John Hébert on bass and Eric McPherson on drums, Jazz’s Finest Working Triumvirate.

The album contains a selection of tunes, that the trio played at the Village Vanguard  in New York City during the second week of February 2012.  The 2cd album contains 15 tracks (18 tunes), half Fred Hersch compositions and half jazz originals, like Softly As In A Morning Sunrise, Nardis or From This Moment On.
Fred Hersch is, in my opinion, one of the most brilliant and surprising piano players around – I cherish albums in my collection like Thelonious:  Fred Hersch plays Monk (1997). The DVD Let Yourself Go – Die Leben des Jazz Pianisten Fred Hersch ( The Lives of Fred Hersch) by  Katja Durreger (2008) impressed and is a very personal document of the many lives of Fred Hersch, fighting against his HIV infection – a life-threaten infection as a sword of Damocles.



Both Hersch sidemen are great accompanists.  John Hébert, I heard him in Fred Hersch group at the 2009 North Sea Jazzfestival in Rotterdam, plays with Fred Hersch for years.  I’ve always loved John’s playing.  I was attracted to him by his sound. He’s from Baton Rouge, and his playing has a looseness that’s great to me. Fred continues: He’s also done his homework in the tradition. He can really play a ballad and he knows where the substitute chords are. One of John’s first recordings was with vocalist – guitarist Eddie Hazzel (1995) and he met Fred Hersch at the set of the 1998 Barbara Sfraga  recording for the Naxos album Oh What A Thrill.

Although drummer Eric McPherson is new in the trio, he has played before in the bands of Jackie McLean, Pharaoh Sanders, Andrew Hill and Greg Osby. I heard him at the North Sea Jazz Festival July 2004 with the Jackie McLean Quintet.  Eric is incredible at what we call the transition game, going from brushes to sticks and other implements, Hersch said: I’m not sure, how many people realize that. He’s a kind of a sleeper. He knows the tradition in and out. He came up as a sideman with some great musicians and he is quite a magician himself. 



Hard to say what track I like best …………. Due to the fact that it is a live recorded album the tunes are not limited to any length, but, remarkable, most tunes are not longer then ca. 7 minutes ……. The ideal length, in my opinion. ( some tracks, that contain two tunes,  like Lonely Woman / Nardis or The Song Is you / Played Twice are double length)
It’s not by accident that the title of the album reads: Alive at the Vanguard and not Live at the Vanguard. In 2010 Fred Hersch felt into a two-month coma, so deep that his doctors feared he’d never regain consciousness. In a previous album, he used this near-death experience into the album My Coma Dreams featuring librettist Herschel Garfin.
